Brattain, Walter Houser Walter H. Brattain was born in Amoy, China, on February 10, 1902, the son of Ross R. Brattain and Ottilie Houser. He spent his childhood and youth in the State of Washington and received a B.S. degree from Whitman College in 1924. He was awarded the M.A. degree by the University of Oregon in 1926 and the Ph.D. degree by the University of Minnesota in 1929. Dr. Brattain has been a member of the Bell Laboratories technical staff since 1929. The chief field of his research has been the surface properties of solids. His early work was concerned with thermionic emission and adsorbed layers on tungsten. He continued on into the field of rectification and photo-effects at semiconductor surfaces, beginning with a study of rectification at the surface of cuprous oxide. This work was followed by similar studies of silicon. Since World War II he has continued in the same line of research with both silicon and germanium. Dr. Brattain's chief contributions to solid state physics have been the discovery of the photo-effect at the free surface of a semiconductor; the invention of the point-contact transistor jointly with Dr. John Bardeen, and work leading to a better understanding of the surface properties of semiconductors, undertaken first with Dr. Bardeen, later with Dr. C.G.B. Garrett, and currently with Dr. P.J. Boddy.

Brattain, Walter Houser Walter H. Brattain nació en Amoy, conocido también como Xiamen, (China) el 10 de Febrero de 1902, hijo de Ross R. Brattain, profesor, y Ottilie Houser. Estudio en Washington y en la Universidad de Oregon y Minessota y recibió el grado B.S. del colegio Whitman en 1924. En 1926, se graduó como M.A. por la Universidad de Oregon y en 1929 consiguió el grado Ph.D. por la Universidad de Minesota. Ese mismo año, pasó a trabajar en la Bell Telephone Laboratories y durante la segunda Guerra Mundial fue contratado por la Universidad de Columbia para el servicio de investigaciones secretas. En la Bell Telephone trabajó en la investigación del complicado campo de las propiedades superficiales de los sólidos y la emisión termoiónica del tungsteno. Luego continuó en el campo de la rectificación y efectos asociados en las superficies de los semiconductores , empezando con un estudio de la rectificación en la superficie del óxido de cobre. Este estudio fue seguido por estudios similares del silicio . Brattain, Walter Houser Americký fyzik, který spolu s Johnem Bardeenem a Williamem Shockleym získali v roce 1956 Nobelovu cenu za fyziku za výzkum vlastností polovodièù a za objev transistoru. Tranzistor nahradil objemné elektronky a vedl k miniaturizaci elektronických zaøízení. Brattain získal Ph.D. na universitì v Minnesotì a v roce 1929 se stal vìdeckým pracovníkem Bellovývh telefonních laboratoøí. Jeho výzkum se týkal povrchových vlastností pevných látek, zejména atomové struktury, která se na povrchu a uvnitø klátek liší. Spolu s Shockleym a Bardeenem vynalezli v roce 1947 tranzistor. Bellovy laboratoøe Brattain opustil v roce 1967, stal se profesorem na Whitman College a v roce 19872 odešel do dùchodu. Získal øadu patentù a napsal mnoho èlánkù o fyzice pevných látek.

Su principal campo de investigación fue el estudio de las propiedades de las superficies de los sólidos, y en particular el de la estructura atómica de un material a nivel superficial, la cual difiere de la del interior. Registró diversas patentes y es autor de numerosos artículos sobre física del estado sólido. En 1956 compartió el Premio Nobel de Física con John Bardeen y William B.
