Sir William Henry Bragg Sir William Henry Bragg William Henry Bragg was a professor of physics and mathematics, and was known for making important contributions to many scientific disciplines. Born in Westward, Cumberland in the United Kingdom on July 2, 1862, Bragg was thoroughly educated while attending Market Harborough Grammar School and King William's College in the Isle of Man. He later went on to study physics at the Cavendish Laboratory, as well as becoming elected to the Professorship of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Adelaide, in Southern Australia. Bragg's career continued to flourish, and he was subsequently appointed Cavendish Professor of Physics at Leeds, Quain Professor of Physics at the University College London, and Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution. Today, thousands of crystal structures have been determined for a wide spectrum of molecules ranging from simple organic compounds to complex multi-chained proteins and nucleic acids. X-ray diffraction has been a fundamental tool in the sciences of molecular biology and biochemistry for the past 50 years. The contributions made by X-ray diffraction experiments are almost unparalleled by any other single technique. Throughout his career, Bragg was noted for his many contributions to a wide variety of scientific endeavors. He also had a sense of humor and is noted for the following quote on the controversy between the electromagnetic energy wave versus particle theories:

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity William Lawrence Bragg was educated at first in Australia at the University of Adelaide, where he took his degree in mathematics with first class honours. He then moved to England where he entered Trinity College, Cambridge as an Allen Scholar, taking first-class honours in the Natural Science Tripos in . In the autumn of that year Bragg began his examination of the von Laue phenomenon and published his first paper on the subject. In he was appointed as fellow and lecturer in Natural Sciences at Trinity College. Later that year he and his father were awarded the Barnard Gold Medal of the U.S. Academy of Sciences, the first of many such honours. From he had been working with his father, Sir William Henry Bragg ( ) in the study of X-ray diffraction, the results of which were published in an abridged version in X-rays and Crystal Structure ). As a consequence of the Braggs' research, the structures of many kinds of crystals were discovered with the aid of the X-ray spectrometer. It was for this work that the Braggs were jointly awarded the Nobel prize for physics in From , during World War I, Bragg served as technical adviser on sound ranging in the map section of British army headquarters in France, calculating the distance of enemy artillerey from the sound of their guns. Ab 1919 lehrte er als Professor in Manchester, bevor er 1937 Direktor der National Physical Laboratories wurde. 1938 übernahm er eine Professur in Cambridge und lehrte ab 1953 an der Royal Institution in London. Einen Namen machte sich Bragg, als er mit kaum 25 Jahren gemeinsam mit seinem Vater ein vereinfachtes Verfahren zur Bestimmung der Wellenlänge von Röntgenstrahlen auf kristallographischer Grundlage (Drehkristallmethode) entwickelte. Damit wurde es zugleich möglich, die bis dahin unbekannte Kristallstruktur von Mineralen, wie beispielsweise Steinsalz oder Diamant, darzustellen. Für die bahnbrechenden Arbeiten in der Röntgenstrukturanalyse und der Röntgenspektroskopie erhielt Bragg zusammen mit seinem Vater 1915 den Nobelpreis für Physik. Mit Hilfe der Braggschen Gleichung wurde es möglich, die monochromatischen Röntgenstrahlen an Kristallen zu beugen.
