Han har på afgørende måde præget den moderne atomfysik. I 1913 opstillede han to revolutionerende postulater: 1 atomerne kan eksistere i en række tilstande med veldefineret energi; 2 atomerne kan gå over fra én tilstand til en anden (med lavere energi) under udsendelse af stråling, f.eks. lys. Bohr skabte den teori om grundstofferne og deres forbindelser, som gjorde det muligt at forklare stoffernes fysiske og kemiske egenskaber og at sætte dem ind i "Det periodiske System". Om denne orden i naturen sagde han til BT november 1922: "Vi møder i naturen et uhyre indtryk af en storladen, en urokket harmoni af en uendelig og dyb skønhed; men jeg tror at mange naturvidenskabsmænd i erkendelse af, hvor begrænset den menneskelige evne er, føres til en slags mystisk, uopklaret tro på en vis sammenhæng i alt. Det, at man i de simpleste ting, kan gøre så uendelig mange vildfarelser, viser, hvor svært det er at lægge nogen mening ind i bestemt udformede religiøse forestillinger...Men naturen er harmoni, een stor harmoni af stor skønhed. Det er, hvad vi ved." Bohrs ideer var af grundlæggende betydning for den endelige matematiske udformning af kvanteteorien (ved Heisenberg, der var Bohrs elev). Bohr kom herunder ind på erkendelsesteoretiske problemer. Et atom er på een gang en partikel, og en energiladning, der udbreder sig som bølge. Begge tilsyneladende uforenelige egenskaber er nødvendige i en fuldstændig beskrivelse af naturfænomenerne. Dette forhold har Bohr betegnet som komplementaritet. Niels Bohr ydede vigtige bidrag til teorien om atomkerners omdannelser og opbygning og fremsatte 1940 en teori om fission, der fik afgørende betydning for udviklingen af atombomben og i øvrigt udnyttelse af atomenergi.

Encyclopedia Bohr, Niels Henrik David [n E E k d A E O r] Pronunciation Key Bohr, Niels Henrik David , Danish physicist, one of the foremost scientists of modern physics. He studied at the Univ. of Copenhagen (Ph.D. 1911) and carried on research on the structure of the atom at Cambridge under Sir James J. Thomson and at Manchester under Lord Ernest Rutherford. In 1916, Bohr became professor of theoretical physics at the Univ. of Copenhagen, and in 1920 he was made director of the Institute of Theoretical Physics, which he was instrumental in founding. Rutherford had discovered the nucleus of the atom in 1911, but classical theory was unable to explain the stability of the nuclear model of the atom. Bohr provided the solution to this problem in 1913, when he postulated that electrons move around the nucleus of the atom in restricted orbits and explained the manner in which the atom absorbs and emits energy. He thus combined the quantum theory with this concept of atomic structure. Much of the knowledge of modern physics was made possible by Bohr's initial revolutionary assumption that atomic processes cannot be explained by classical laws alone. Bohr was a leading figure in the continuing development of the quantum theory over the next twenty years. He received the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics. When Bohr visited the United States in 1938 and 1939, Bohr told American scientists of his belief, based on experiments reported by German scientists, that the uranium atom could be split into approximately equal halves. This was verified by scientists at Columbia. Bohr returned to Denmark but fled from the Nazi-occupied country in 1943. He gave valuable assistance in the atomic bomb research at Los Alamos, N.Mex., and in 1945 again returned to Denmark. His writings include

Nov. 18, 1962, Copenhagen in full NIELS HENRIK DAVID BOHR Danish physicist who was the first to apply the quantum theory, which restricts the energy of a system to certain discrete values, to the problem of atomic and molecular structure. For this work he received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1922. He developed the so-called Bohr theory of the atom and liquid model of the atomic nucleus. Bohr Early life Bohr's father, Christian Bohr, professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen, was known for his work on the physical and chemical aspects of respiration. His mother, Ellen Adler Bohr, came from a wealthy Jewish family prominent in Danish banking and parliamentary circles. Bohr's scientific interests and abilities were evident early, and they were encouraged and fostered in a warm, intellectual family atmosphere. Niels's younger brother, Harald, became a brilliant mathematician. Bohr distinguished himself at the University of Copenhagen, winning a gold medal from the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters for his theoretical analysis of and precise experiments on the vibrations of water jets as a way of determining surface tension. In 1911 he received his doctorate for a thesis on the electron theory of metals that stressed the inadequacies of classical physics for treating the behaviour of matter at the atomic level. He then went to England, intending to continue this work with Sir J.J. Thomson at Cambridge. Thomson never showed much interest in Bohr's ideas on electrons in metals, however, although he had worked on this subject in earlier years. Bohr moved to Manchester in March 1912 and joined Ernest Rutherford's group studying the structure of the atom.
