Astrobiology chief Blumberg resigns
By Harvey Black
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Astrobiology Institute , told The Scientist yesterday that he would be stepping down in five months. Blumberg, who has held the post since 1999, said he will remain at NASA until the agency appoints a new director. Blumberg, who serves on the editorial advisory board of The Scientist , declined to say why he was leaving the position, but said he had other things he hoped to do and that he was stepping down "with regret." NASA officials, he said, have asked him to stay. There was no word on a replacement for Blumberg, although the Institute is already advertising for the post. Don Savage, a NASA spokesperson, said a search committee had been formed. Blumberg received his MD from Columbia University and a PhD in biochemistry from Oxford University. The 1976 Physiology or Medicine Nobel Prize Blumberg, 76, said he also plans to devote more time to research. "There's incomplete work I left behind at Fox Chase Cancer Center ," he said, referring to the research center in Philadelphia where he spent the bulk of his career.

Oxford Names Blumberg As Balliol Master
By None Date: July 25, 1988 In a break with tradition, Balliol College, one of Oxford University’s 35 colleges, has named Baruch S. Blumberg of Philadelphia, Pa., as its next Master. Nobel prizewinner Blumberg is both the first United States citizen and the first scientist elected to head the college, which traditionally chooses scholars from the humanities. Succeeding medieval philosopher Anthony Kenny, Blumberg, vice president of population oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center, will assume the mastership in September 1989. At that time, Kenny will leave to become secretary of the Rhodes Trust, which administers the Rhodes scholarship pro- gram. In deciding to elect Blumberg, Balliol’s fellows were influenced not only by his distinguished scientific career, but also by his fundraising contacts in U.S. universities and industry. This fall, Oxford will launch an international campaign to raise more than $176 mil- lion. As master, Blumberg will be expected to spend a substantial part of the year in residence in Oxford to teach and entertain on the college’s behalf, but he will maintain an appointment at Fox Chase as a senior scientist. In his Philadelphia role, he will be able to collaborate in research projects at the cancer center as well as establish new research and academic collaborations at oxford. “Education and science are essentially international activities, and in that sense, taking this new position is consistent with the rest of my career,” Blumberg, says.

HEPATITIS B AND THE PREVENTION OF PRIMARY CANCER OF THE LIVER
Selected Publications of Baruch S Blumberg

edited by Baruch S Blumberg (Fox Chase Cancer Center, USA)
This important book comprises a narrative account of research on the hepatitis B virus (and related subjects) and selected reprints from the laboratory of Nobel laureate Baruch S Blumberg and his colleagues. The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the ten most common deadly infectious diseases and is responsible for 1.1 million deaths a year worldwide. Research in his laboratory resulted in the discovery of HBV and the invention of the vaccine which protects one against it. The research began as an apparently esoteric study of human biochemical and immunologic variation. This required field-work in Africa, the Arctic, the Pacific, the Americas, and in many other locations and populations. The overall goal was to identify inherited biological differences which were related to differing responses to disease-causing agents. The virus was discovered using the blood of an infected person who had developed the antibody, to detect the virus present in another infected person who had become a carrier of the virus. Screening of blood donors led to the near-elimination of post-transfusion hepatitis B. There are now national HBV vaccination programs in more than 70 countries. During the past decade these programs have strikingly reduced the prevalence of HBV in many countries and there has been a significant drop in the incidence of cancer of the liver in the vaccinated cohorts. The HBV vaccination program is now, after smoking cessation, the most widely used cancer prevention program in the world.

Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg gained international prominence in 1976 and has been waiting to tell his full story ever since.
Last month, Blumberg published a book that was a quarter of a century in the making.
Titled Hepatitis B: The Hunt for a Killer Virus , Blumberg takes the reader through the scientific research that led to his findings and the resulting Nobel Prize for medicine.
Last week, the Brooklyn-born Blumberg, 76, joined WHYY-FM Radio Times talk show host Marty Moss-Coane at the cancer center auditorium for an hourlong discussion of the book and his career. Cancer center staff, faculty and other guests made up the audience.
Still, the numbers are a lot better than they were before the vaccine. In China, 16 percent of the population carried the virus. Today, the figure has dropped to less than 1 percent.
Worldwide, there were as many as 375 million carriers.
The vaccine was field-tested in the United States and abroad and found to be safe and effective. The PBS program Nova told the world about the results, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the Heptavax-B vaccine for general use in 1982.

BENEFITS AND THREATS TO MANKIND
From Proceedings of the International Conference The Discovery of Polonium and Radium – Its Scientific and Philosophical . 17-20 September 1998, Warsaw, Poland
I am very pleased to have been invited to this historical meeting. I have been asked to speak on one of the important themes of the conference; the benefits and threats that are imposed by the scientific method. The scientific process involves both the solution of problems and the creation of problems. When a hypothesis is tested, a large amount of data is collected in order to validate or reject the stated hypothesis. This data, in turn, can be used to generate additional hypotheses, usually more than one. These new hypothesis, all or some of them, can also be tested, and more data is collected. This again leads to hypotheses, some of which can be tested, and the process can continue for an extended period until a sufficient number of hypotheses have been validated or rejected to complete the project. The scientist ends up with many answered questions, but even more questions and mysteries that are unanswered. Another important consequence has been the reduction in the incidence of primary cancer of the liver or hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). HCC is one of the most common cancers; worldwide, it is the third most common cause of death from cancer in males and the seventh most common cause of death from cancer in females. About 85% of primary cancer of the liver is a consequence of chronic infection with HBV. In a study of vaccinated and unvaccinated populations in Taiwan, carried out over a period of ten years, the incidence of HCC in the impacted population has decreased to one third of what it was prior to the vaccination program. If these observations are confirmed in subsequent studies, than it is likely that one of the world's most common cancers will be controlled.

By: Baruch S. Blumberg, M.D., Ph.D. Editor’s note: Dr. Blumberg is one of the HBF’s founding scientific advisors and we encourage everyone to read about his discovery that changed our world. His commitment to completing the circle of discovery, from virus - to vaccine - to cure, is a vital source of motivation for us all. The discovery of the deadly hepatitis B virus and the vaccine against it was one of the great triumphs of twentieth-century medicine. And it almost didn’t happen.
Dr. Blumberg shares this story in his scientific memoir, Hepatitis B: The Hunt for a Killer Virus. With wit and insight, Blumberg describes how he and a team of researchers found a virus they were not looking for and created a vaccine for a disease they previously knew little about - work that took the author around the world and won him the Nobel Prize. As he takes the reader through the investigative twists and turns of his journey, Blumberg recounts with immediacy the exciting moments in the lab and in the field - from a hair-raising flight to Africa to an unforgettable encounter with Alaskan sled dogs. Hepatitis B: The Hunt for a Killer Virus is a fascinating chronicle of a major discovery and illuminates the trail of remarkable “accidents” that happen when scientists like Blumberg seek answers to interesting questions. Serendipity and his determined persistence resulted in discoveries that have generated a pharmaceutical industry, have global public-health applications, and continue to save millions of lives each year.
