Achtergrond Nicolaas Bloembergengebouw officieel geopend: 'Door de hoogte is het net een kathedraal!' De laatste architectonische aanwinst voor De Uithof is het Nicolaas Bloembergengebouw. Op 1 november wordt de nieuwe behuizing van de spectrometers van de faculteit Scheikunde officieel geopend. "Aan al onze eisen is voldaan." Tussen het Kruytgebouw, het Educatorium en het Centrumgebouw Noord (CGN) staat het nieuwe bouwsel, in de volksmond het NMR-gebouw. Het heeft geen eigen ingang, het personeel kan naar binnen via het Kruytgebouw of via CGN. "Anders zouden we een eigen portiersvoorziening moeten hebben", zegt dr. Rien de Bie, de uitvoerend directeur van het Bijvoetcentrum van de faculteit Scheikunde. Op de kosten van het gebouw is echter niet beknibbeld. "Aan al onze eisen is voldaan", zegt De Bie tevreden terwijl hij een espresso serveert. De onderzoekers in het gebouw werken met 'nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers', apparaten met een magnetisch veld van honderduizenden keren dat van de aarde. Zo'n sterk veld maakt bankpasjes waardeloos, brengt elektronische apparatuur op hol en vernielt pacemakers. Voorzichtigheid is dus geboden. "Het gebouw is zo ontworpen dat je er helemaal door- en omheen kunt lopen zonder last te hebben van het magneetveld", vertelt De Bie. Het spiksplinternieuwe gebouw is een hele verbetering ten opzichte van de eerdere huisvesting van de NMR-afdeling. "We zaten eerst in het Kruytgebouw en bij diergeneeskunde achter de varkensstallen." Sinds juni is de afdeling verhuisd, net op tijd voor de brand in het Kruytgebouw. "Daar hebben we geluk mee gehad", zegt De Bie opgelucht.

Lasers are used in worldwide optical fiber communication systems, in surgery and medicine, in recording and play-back of compact disks, and in the printing, materials processing, manufacturing and construction industries. Examples of laser applications which have a direct or indirect impact on the lives of many individuals are presented. Dr. Nicolaas Bloembergen is Gerhard Gade University Professor, Emeritus, at Harvard University. In 1991 he served as president of the American Physical Society. He is a recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1981, the Lorentz Medal of the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences in 1978, the National Medal of Science, awarded by the President of the United States in 1974, the Medal of Honor of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the Frederic Ives Medal of the Optical Society of America. He is a member of various academies in the United States and abroad. In addition to his service on the faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University for four decades, he was also a visiting professor in Paris, Leiden, Bangalore, Munich, Berkeley, and Pasadena. Furthermore, Dr. Bloembergen has served on numerous advisory committees of U.S. Government agencies and of industrial and academic institutions. He is the author of two monographs;
