Inicio Buscador Recomendar sitio

Felix Bloch
Bloch, Felix (1905-1983), amerikanischer Physiker schweizerischer Herkunft, geboren in Zürich.

Felix Bloch 23. November in Z¼rich 10.

Spy Like Us?
Felix Bloch, one of the great unsolved mysteries of Cold War espionage, is back in the headlinesand still driving a bus in Chapel Hill

Remember Walter Mitty? A character in a short story by James Thurber, he made his way through a humdrum domestic life by living in various fantasy worlds. One moment he was a Navy hydroplane pilot, the next a master surgeon. For Mitty, the banal fabric of daily life provided a rich tapestry of imaginary intrigue. March 7, 2001
T R I A N G L E S

In real life, some people go the other way. Consider Felix Bloch, who could be Mitty's alter-ego. For Bloch, the work-a-day world is a welcome respite from years in the spotlight. A former high-ranking diplomat, Bloch worked 32 years for the State Department before his dismissal in 1990 under a cloud of suspicion that he had spied for the KGB. Mobbed by the media wherever he went in Washington, he moved to North Carolina to start fresh.

.) Then he took a second job as a bus driver for Chapel Hill Transit. When a reporter asked him why he'd sought such employment, he said, "to prove that people in this country can work and eat." His response to further inquiries was simply, "I won't talk with you, now or ever." Friends offered clues about what Bloch was up to. "He has inferred that the job was something to do to continue to function as a human being, to function with and among other human beings," reported Henry Mattox, a longtime Bloch acquaintance and fellow veteran of the foreign service. Such comments, coupled with Bloch's silence, have left the impression that it's really anybody's guess why Bloch, who has reportedly never lacked money, put on a blue collar. Shoplifting arrests in 1993 and 1994 didn't help clear up questions about his motivations.

    58. Electron Magnetic Resonance
felix bloch is now remembered largely for his macroscopic phenomenological description of the magnetic properties of the atomic nucleus.
    http://www.chm.bris.ac.uk/emr/History/bloch.htm
The first successful nuclear magnetic resonance experiments in solid (parrafin wax) and liquid phases (water) were carried out independently at the end of 1945 respectively by Purcell, Torrey and Pound and by Bloch, Hansen and Packard. Felix Bloch is now remembered largely for his macroscopic phenomenological description of the magnetic properties of the atomic nucleus. This allowed him to develop a theory of nuclear induction which is particularly well suited to the study of transient effects, at the same time it is broadly consistent with a quantum theoretical treatment for systems in a steady state. Bloch's method was to derive expressions for the real and imaginary parts of the nuclear magnetic susceptibility. The Bloch Equations must still be studied by every serious student of NMR or EMR, they apply as well to the nucleus as to the electron. In recent years they have achieved even more prominence with the development of NMR based medical scanners (MRI)- see the selective slice simulation applet Felix Bloch and Edward Mills Purcell were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1952 "for their development of new methods for nuclear magnetic precision measurements and discoveries in connection therewith" Zavoisky was overlooked, and EMR missed out!
