Observers Fear Funding Practices May Spell The Death Of Innovative Grant Proposals
By Billy Goodman Innovative Grant Proposals With fewer applications for support making the cut, novel ideas are the first to go, investigators contend Author: Billy Goodman
Point Grants NIGMS' Marvin Cassman agrees that risky proposals don't get funded. The traditional, romantic notion of scientific research is of a glorious, serendipitous journey into the unknown. But this ideal is belied, in the perception of many scientists, by the apparent reality that much of what gets funded these days is less exploratory and more predictable_cloning and sequencing a gene, for example. While not denying the importance of such predictable studies, the scientific community shares a nearly universal conviction that proposals for risky, innovative research stand very little chance of being funded by federal granting agencies. Grant administrators themselves acknowledge that unconventional ideas or those with a short or disputed track record rarely make the cut. "Controversial areas will not do as well as applications where there is broad consensus," states Marvin Cassman, acting director of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). "Given the degree of difficulty in funding these days, some applications [in areas] where there is [scientific] disagreement will inevitably find themselves outside the bounds of the funding range." Grant-seeking scientists and funding agency staff also cite the very low percentage of all proposals that are funded as the major reason for the difficulty of getting support for risky research.

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER Dr. Gunter Blobel, a scientist at New York's Rockefellar University, won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday, October 11, 1999. He won the prize for discovering how proteins find their correct places in cells. This process happens abnormally in diseases such as cystic fibrosis. Blobel moved to the United States in the 1960's. He is originally from Waltersdarf, Germany. He officially became a U.S. citizen in 1980. He says that the research for the prize he won this week began back in the 1970's. Dr. Blobel will donate the prize money, which totals $960,000, to charity.

Science Heavyweights To Hit Palm Beach
[Palm Beach Post]
They have coaxed apart strands of human DNA, deciphered brain- cell communication and cracked the genetic riddles behind high cholesterol and some cancers. A who's-who of scientific inquiry arrives in Palm Beach next week as The Scripps Research Institute holds the first Florida meeting of its Board of Scientific Governors. Nine Nobel laureates are expected among the group, which advises Scripps President Richard Lerner on where to direct the institute's mental might. Their meeting will culminate Thursday night when Gov. Jeb Bush hosts a reception at The Breakers for both the scientists and the public officials charged with oversight of the state's half- billion-dollar investment for Scripps' venture in Palm Beach County. While the scientists debate cell metabolism vs. brain chemistry, the nine-member board overseeing the state's investment will sign off on a contract requiring Scripps to guarantee job creation and a steady flow of research money into the state. But several of the scientist-advisers said in interviews that Scripps should resist the pressure to support only "safe" research likely to produce financial rewards for the state. Most scientists labor in obscurity, motivated by curiosity about the universe, not by a desire to launch a business or invent a new drug, they said. Some inquiries can take decades to result in obvious applications in the real world.

Travel New York City December 2003 NYU School of Medicine Faculty Member Receives France's Highest Scientific Honor The French Academy of Sciences selected Dr. David Sabatini as the recipient of its highest honor for 2003, the Grande Medaille D'Or (the Grand Gold Medal), in recognition of his scientific contributions to Cell Biology. Previous recipients of the Medal include many illustrious scientists, such as Louis Pasteur, Pierre and Marie Curie, Gustave Eiffel, and Henri Poincare. The Grande Medaille was presented to Dr. Sabatini at a formal ceremony held in Paris under the Grand Coupole of the Institut de France. The Medal is given every year to a French or foreign scientist working in one of the many disciplines represented in the Academy, which include the mathematical, physical, chemical, natural, biological and biomedical sciences. The award recognizes a decisive contribution to science in one of these areas and emphasizes the originality of the discoveries, their international impact, and the awardee's role in creating a true school of research. The rules of the Academy stipulate that the work of the recipient of the medal must have been carried out in an important area of fundamental research, and must have resulted in new insights and a greater understanding of the discipline in which the award was given.

Intracellular Protein Traffic
Investigator,
The Rockefeller University Biography... Summary: Membranes are impermeable to proteins. Essentially, proteins are synthesized in only one of the cellular compartments, the cytoplasm (although a few are synthesized in the mitoplasm of mitochondria and the chloroplasm of chloroplasts). How are newly synthesized proteins directed to their proper membranes and compartments? And how do these relatively large molecules traverse the compartmental membranes without destroying the essential gradients of small molecules and ions that exist across each of these membranes? How are membrane proteins integrated into membranes such that each member of a given species of membrane protein exhibits precisely the same domains on the cis side and the trans side of the membrane? Of particular interest is that PCCs are also used for the integration of membrane proteins into the lipid bilayer. Accordingly, the PCC is predicted to reversibly open in two dimensions, with opening across the membrane triggered by the signal sequence, and opening to the lipid bilayer triggered by the "stop-transfer" sequence of the translocating membrane protein. Hence the PCC, which is able to respond to sequence information in the translocating chain, is more than merely a passive conduit.

MAYOR GIULIANI HONORS ROCKEFELLER UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR GUNTER BLOBEL ON WINNING THE 1999 NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE
At a City Hall ceremony today, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani honored the winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in Medicine, Dr. Gunter Blobel, by presenting him with a proclamation declaring October 14, 1999, "Dr. Gunter Blobel Day." Dr. Blobel, a longtime New York City resident and distinguished professor at Rockefeller University, received the Nobel Prize on Monday for his pioneering research on how newly manufactured protein molecules are properly transported within cells. Since cells cannot function without the accurate distribution of protein molecules, Blobel's research revealing the existence of a mapping system within cells has implications for many diseases, including cystic fibrosis, Alzheimer's disease and AIDS. "On behalf of all New Yorkers, I congratulate Dr. Blobel on receiving the prestigous Nobel Prize in Medicine for his groundbreaking lifework in cell biology," the Mayor said. "This year, New York City had the distinction of being home to two Noble Prize winners, Dr. Blobel and Columbia University professor Robert A. Mundell, reflecting our City's long tradition of being a hotbed of innovation and the birthplace of cutting edge ideas. " The Mayor continued, "Many of the world's leading scholars in such diverse fields as economics and physics choose New York City as the place to pursue their ideas. Not only is Dr. Blobel considered one of the preemeninent scientists in his field, he represents the best of New York City's thriving academic and research community. "

Don't forget the Zip Code! That's a rule fixed in the minds of most people because they know their mail probably won't be delivered without this number. The realization that the billion or so proteins within a cell bear molecular Zip Codes that direct them to appropriate destinations has won German-born cell biologist Gunter Blobel this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Besides revealing a fundamental method by which cells organize themselves and carry out functions, Blobel's work has helped explain several rare diseases in which proteins travel to the wrong location. In their efforts to engineer plants and bacteria to synthesize drugs or other proteins, biotech companies have also made use of the molecular zip codes within proteins. Blobel, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at Rockefeller University in New York, made his Nobel-winning discoveries in the 1970s. The original observation occurred when he was examining protein synthesis and the role of a ribbonlike compartment within the cell known as the endoplasmic reticulum.
