Special Fiction Feature

"The Whoremaster of Pald"
by Harry James Connolly
Illustrated by Chris Pepper
From
Black Gate Summer, 2001 This is a Special Presentation of a complete work of fiction which originally appeared in the Summer, 2001 issue of Black Gate My prison cell stank like a bird cage. It was terribly dark, and I listened for the sound of rats. I despise rats. I lay down on the wooden plank that would serve as my bed for the night. My bruised back throbbed, but at least I could still breathe. It’s always nice to breathe after a beating. In the morning a sweet little sparrow of a girl would testify against me. The charge was murder, and she had seen me do it. It had started only the evening before, when I decided that something had to be done about the new Warden. Something had to be done about the new Warden. I stood alone on the veranda, surveying the Street all the way down to the docks. I saw no musicians. No actors. No mimes. The Quarter lay empty, except for a trio of Tilpic sailors staggering along the gutter. They sang in their own language, their voices clear, the song indecipherable. Their performance would have scandalized the respectable citizens of Pald, but on this side of the Wall, in the Foreign Quarter, attitudes were more permissive. Or they were supposed to be. Public performance was illegal in Pald, of course, but the law was not normally enforced on the Street. The Foreign Quarter was famous for its diverse music, foods and women. Or it was, before the new Warden arrived.

During the 1960s, Sir James W. Black developed propranolol, which the Nobel Committee in 1988 called "the greatest breakthrough when it comes to pharmaceuticals against heart illness since the discovery of digitalis 200 years ago." Black recognized that an agent that blocked the cardiac effects of epinephrine might reduce ischemia and lower the risk of death by decreasing the heart's demand for oxygen. A series of elegant randomized clinical trials reported in the 1980s confirmed the value of Black's insight by showing that beta-blockers improve survival after myocardial infarction. JAMES W. GERARD
MY FOUR YEARS IN GERMANY CHAPTER V PSYCHOLOGY AND CAUSES WHICH PREPARED THE NATION FOR WAR TO the outsider, the Germans seem a fierce and martial nation. But, in reality, the mass of the Germans, in consenting to the great sacrifice entailed by their enormous preparations for war, have been actuated by fear. This fear dates from the Thirty Years' War, the war which commenced in 1618 and was terminated in 1648. In 1648, when the Treaty of Westphalia was concluded, Germany was almost a desert. Its population had fallen from twenty millions to four millions. The few remaining people were so starved that cannibalism was openly practised. In the German States polygamy was legalised, and was a recognised institution for many years thereafter. I am convinced that the fear of war induced by a hereditary instinct, caused the mass of the Germans to become the tools and dupes of those who played upon this very fear in order to create a military autocracy. On the other hand, and, especially, in the noble class, we have in Germany a great number of people who believe in war for its own sake. In part, these nobles are the descendants of the Teutonic Knights who conquered the Slav population of Prussia, and have ever since bound that population to their will. The Prussian army was created by the father of Frederick the Great, who went to the most ridiculous extremes in obtaining tall men at all costs for his force.

William Faulkner was born on September 25, 1897, in New Albany, Mississippi, a small town thirty-five miles east of Oxford. Soon the family moved to Ripley, Mississippi, but by the time William was five, they were settled in Oxford, the county seat of Lafayette County. This section of north central Mississippi is bordered by the Tallahatchie River on the north and the Yocana River on the south. The county has two main roads, both intersecting the town of Oxford, which is situated fairly close to the middle of the region. It is an area that around 1900 was still largely dependent on cotton, with a few plantations of moderate size. The county was full of thickets and swamps, forest and black bottom land, and sand hills covered with scrub pine. The railroad, begun by great-grandfather W. C. Falkner, ran south from Tennessee, through Oxford, and on toward the Gulf of Mexico.
