James W. Black

James W. Black is a Professor of Analytical Pharmacology Emeritus at King's College, London, England and also a Nobel Laureate in Medicine.
Dr. Black's special research interest concerns the interpretation of complex drug actions using mathematical models. Specifically, his interest in cardiovascular physiology drew him to research at Imperial Chemical Industries in London, England which led to the discovery of pronethalol, the first clinically evaluated beta-blocker. In 1988, he founded an independent research organization for promoting the rational basis for new drug research.
Dr. Black was knighted Sir James in 1981 and received the Nobel Prize for Medicine for discoveries of important principles for drug treatment in 1988.
He received a Doctorate of Medicine at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. After graduation, he spent 12 years in academic physiology successively at the Universities of St. Andrews, Singapore and Glasgow.

American molecular geneticist who pioneered the use of automated gene sequencers. In 1990, he developed "expressed sequence tags" (ESTs), a new strategy for gene discovery and tagging that revolutionized the biological sciences. In 1995, Venter, in collaboration with Hamilton Smith, determined the DNA sequence of the entire genome (all the genetic material of an organism) of Hemophilus influenzae, a bacterium that causes earaches and meningitis in humans. The achievement marked the first time that the complete sequence of a free-living organism had been deciphered, and it was accomplished in less than a year. He founded the Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR). By 2000, his company Celera Genomics sequenced the human genome. George Harold Brown

Born 14 Oct 1908; died 11 Dec 1987.
American electrical engineer, a pioneer in radio-thermics, who made major contributions to the development of radio and television broadcast antennas. In 1936, Brown invented the so-called turnstyle antenna for television broadcasting. Because of this, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) adopted a TV system of 441 lines. In 1938, Brown developed the vestigial sideband filter for use in television transmission, doubling the horizontal resolution of television pictures at any given bandwith. During WW II, with RCA’s researchers, George Brown’s group used radio-frequency heating in the bulk dehydration of penicillin at E.R. Squibb, a "sewing machine" for thermoplastics, and more consistent riveting and welding techniques.

Sir James Black
Sir James Black
British pharmacologist who (along with George H. Hitchings and Gertrude B. Elion) received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1988 for his development of two important drugs, propranolol and cimetidine.
Black's drug discoveries arose out of his systematic research on the interactions between certain cell receptors in the body and chemicals in the bloodstream that attach to them. Black wanted to find a drug that would relieve angina pectoris, i.e., the spasms of intense pain felt in the chest when the heart is not receiving enough oxygen. It was known that beta receptors in the heart muscle, when stimulated by the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine, cause the heartbeat to quicken and increase the strength of the heart's contractions, thus increasing that organ's oxygen requirement. Black developed a drug that would block the beta receptor sites, thus preventing epinephrine and norepinephrine from attaching to them. The resulting inhibition of the hormones' excitatory effects reduced the heart's demand for oxygen and could thus help relieve anginal pain. Other beta-blocking agents were subsequently developed to treat heart attacks, hypertension, migraines, and other conditions. Black used a similar approach to develop a drug treatment for stomach and duodenal ulcers, which are largely caused by the stomach's oversecretion of gastric acids. He developed a drug that could block the histamine receptors that stimulate the secretion of gastric acid in the stomach, and the new drug, cimetidine, revolutionized the treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
