A monument of Norwegian granite is dedicated to Bjornstjerne Martinus Bjornson. Best known as author of Ja vi elskerdette landet (Yes, I love this land), Norwegian poet and patriot Bjornson won a Nobel prize for literature in 1903 "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit." Bjornson was also a prominent exponent of scientific agriculture. The medallion bust of Bjornson on the monument is work of Nowegian sculptor Sigvold Asbornson. I believe that the monument was erected in 1903. It sat in the open area in front of Old Main (see aerial map ). It can be seen in front of Old Main in the postcard dated 1909 below. The published book does not contain page numbers. However, the page containing the portrait of Thomas Theodore Colwick (following the introduction) should be considered as page number one with the pages that follow numbered in sequence. Page numbers in the index are usually followed by letters which identify the column in which the name is found (the first column by the letter “a”, the second column by the letter “b”, and the third column by the letter "c"). In some cases, the reference to the person in the article is somewhat obscure and not specifically identified, or the name has been misspelled. His political opinions made him sometimes a polemical person in his homeland and was even charged of high treason. On his novels he often used folklore describing peasant life in Norway. He died in Paris and his remains were brought back to Norway in a Norwegian warship. He was buried with great honours. Karen Blixen Karen Blixen, 1885-1962, known as 'Isak Dinesen' Writer. Denmark. Blixen became world-wide famous for her novel "Letters from Africa", which has been taken to the cinema as "Out of Africa". She immigrated to Africa with her husband on the eve of World War I. http://hometown.aol.com/clasz/Chap14.html
Main htmlAdWH('7002679', '234', '60'); CHAPTER FOURTEEN Realism Triumphant Introduction - Since events are moving so rapidly, we need to take a little time here to catch up on the state of world affairs around 1877. Europe is dominating Asia, the French in Indochina, the Russians in the north and the English across the south. Railroads are springing up everywhere, steamships are speeding up travel across the oceans, the telegraph is a reality and transatlantic cable provides communication between Europe and America. Next year the first commercial telephone exchange will go into operation in the U.S. The Ottoman Empire* is shrinking visibly and the European powers are fighting over each piece. Political State of Affairs British Empire - In 1877 Queen Victoria* is proclaimed Empress of India which puts Great Britain in the position of being the most powerful player on the world stage. This is helped along by the fact that Great Britain acquired the Suez Canal* (built by the French 1859-69) in 1875 when Disraeli* (who is now Prime Minister for Queen Victoria* again) gets Great Britain to buy controlling interest in the Canal This is a smart move because it makes it possible for British shipping to take the short route back and forth to India and parts East instead of going all the way around Africa. And, speaking of Africa - This year Great Britain annexes the Transvaal*. [This is that area in north-east South Africa that was put together by the Boers* (a bunch of Dutch and French farmers who had moved north from the coastal area to the veld, a high, mountainous area). In 1848 Paul Kruger* (1825-1904) and Jacobus Pretorius* (1799-1853, the Boer leader who defeated the Zulus and founded the Boer Republic of Natal) created the nucleus of Transvaal*. Pretorius'* son, Martinus*, was the first president of it. Martinus Pretorius* and Paul Kruger* become leaders of the Boers opposed to British rule. There will be a lot of fighting down here in Africa, especially when, in the near future, they find gold and diamonds here.]

Morgenbladet in 1854 and contributed criticism as well as stories to various other newspapers. In 1857 he succeeded in starting a literary career when he wrote the historical play Mellem slagene (Between the Battles) and became stage director at the Norwegian Theatre in Bergen. During the following years he took part in national politics (as he did all his life) and divided his creative activities between historical tragedies and country tales such as Arne (1858) and En glad gut (1860) "A Happy Boy", both of which were meant to show a kinship between the contemporary peasant and the saga heroes of old in their taciturnity and love of adventure. The years 1860-1863 he spent abroad, mostly in Italy, where he was deeply affected by Michelangelo and Greek sculpture.
The seventies were marked by a second visit to Italy (1873-1875) and a turn toward realism and social problems which produced the plays En fallit (The Bankrupt) and (The Editor), both in 1875. In Kongen (1877) "The King", he dealt with the loss of Christian ideals in today's secular society, a concern which led him into a religious crisis and to a rejection of the church dogma. In 1882 he left Norway and spent five years abroad where En hanske (1883) "A Gauntlet" was written, a play in which he attacked hypocrisy concerning sexual matters as well as the liberal attitude of the Bohemians. During the following years he wrote educational novels such as
