We Are One Church
Embracing and Living into the Dream of God
This statement reflects our vision for the Episcopal Church in Western New York. It is a vision grounded in the myriad of opportunities God envisions for us.The dream of God invites us to understand the ways we are called to exercise our citizenship in the kingdom of God. It calls us to understand the daring, free, accepting, and compassionate way of life that Jesus modeled for us. It calls us to make Jesus' way our way. Our ability to live into God's dream is limited only by our own capacity to open ourselves to God.
We who receive the Body of Christ must always be aware of the ways God challenges us to be the Body of Christ wherever we may be. This is the challenge we embrace as the Episcopal Church in Western New York.
Our mission, therefore, is to live and proclaim by word and deed the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ, through lives that are rooted in belonging to God and are nurtured in prayer.
We strive to be aware disciples of Jesus, empowered by the Holy Spirit to understand and express our faith through listening, learning and telling the story of Jesus' life and teachings, and through telling our own story of God's action in our lives and the world around us.
We strive to be a church of caring, respect, confidence, courage, warmth and friendship, filled with a sense of joy and praise.

Philip Michael Ellis
First Vicar Apostolic of the Western District, England, subsequently Bishop of Segni, Italy, b. in 1652; d. 16 Nov., 1726. He was the son of the Rev. John Ellis, Rector of Waddesdon, Buckinghamshire, a descendant of the Ellis family of Kiddall Hall, Yorkshire, and Susannah Welbore. Of six brothers, John, the eldest, became Under-Secretary of State to William III; William, a Jacobite Protestant , was Secretary of State of James II in exile; Philip became a Benedictine monk and Catholic bishop; Welbore became Protestant bishop of Kildare and afterwards of Meath, Ireland; Samuel was Marshal of King's Bench; and Charles an Anglican clergyman. Philip, while still a Westminster schoolboy, was converted to the Catholic Faith, and when eighteen years old went to St. Gregory's, Douai , where he was professed, taking the name of Michael in religion (30 Nov., 1670). After ordination he returned in 1685 to the English mission where he became one of the royal chaplains. In 1688 he was appointed vicar Apostolic of the newly created Western District and was consecrated by Mgr. d'Adda, the papal nuncio (6 May). At the revolution in 1688 he was imprisoned, but being soon liberated he retired to Saint-Germain and afterwards to Rome. In 1696 he was named assistant prelate at the pontifical throne; and in Rome his knowledge of English affairs made him so useful that his repeated petitions for leave to return to his vicariate were refused. In 1704 he resigned the vicariate, and in 1708 was made Bishop of Segni, being enthroned on 28 Oct. His first care was to rebuild the ruined monastery of S. Chiara and open it as a diocesan seminary. This he enriched with many gifts and a large legacy. A curios survival of his English title survives in an inscription at Segni to "Ph. M. Mylord Ellis". Eleven sermons preached in 1685 and 1686 before James II, Queen Mary of Modena, and Queen Henrietta Maria, were published in pamphlet form, some of which have been reprinted (London, 1741; 1772). The Acts of his synod at Segni in 1710 were also published by order of Clement XI.

Nobel Prize for Medicine/Physiology, 1989 J. Michael Bishop received the 1989 Nobel Prize for Medicine/Physiology for his discovery that normal cells contain genes capable of becoming cancerous. He shared the award with Dr. Harold Varmus. Dr. Bishop currently teaches and studies microbiology at the University of California, San Francisco. Science and music equally attracted the interest of Dr. J. Michael Bishop. When he was growing up he was torn between which one to pursue. By participating in both, he came to realize that his talents were more suited for a career in science. But he didn't give up his music. During his college years, Dr. Bishop considered several careers including journalism, teaching music and forestry. Even when he entered Harvard Medical School, Dr. Bishop was uncertain about wanting to practice medicine. But with the help and influence of teachers and friends, he realized that research was the path he wanted to take. He made that decision at the age of 30. Dr. Bishop became intrigued by microbiology by reading about it on his own. He was eventually steered to the study of how cells become cancerous.

Hour Two: Chromosome 7 / J. Michael Bishop - 'How to Win the Nobel Prize'
Researchers this week reported that they have completed the sequencing of chromosome 7 in the human genome. It's the largest of the chromosomes sequenced so far, and scientists believe that it contains genetic code with links to deafness, cystic fibrosis, B-cell lymphoma and other cancers. The chromosome has chromosome has about 1,150 genes and 940 'pseudogenes,' regions that appear similar to genes but are inactivated for some reason. We'll talk about the project to decode chromosome 7, and what it might mean for biological and medical research. Then, we'll turn our attention to past ground-breaking biological science, and a conversation with J. Michael Bishop, co-winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Bishop shared the award with Harold Varmus "for their discovery of the cellular origin of retroviral oncogenes." The work has helped shape scientists' understanding of mechanisms for cancer tumor development. We'll talk with Bishop about his work, his life in science since then, and his new book, "How to Win the Nobel Prize." Call in with your questions and comments at 1-800-989-8255 (3-4 Eastern), and share your opinions online in our

San Francisco, CA, 94143 Tumorigenesis is a protracted and stepwise process, a sequence of mishaps that appear to be largely genetic in nature (1). What engenders the individual steps? What is their identity? Does each type of malignacy rise from a different and specific set of steps? Must the steps occur in a particular chronological order? How does each contribute to tumorigenesis? Does the cancer cell progress to independence of early steps? By what rationale should we choose individual steps as targets for new therapies? The answers to these questions cannot be obtained by the restrospective analysis of human tumors. Instead, we need to identify experimental models that permit the deliberate and targetted manipulation of the genome to create tumorigenic lesions. The laboratory mouse has proven to be the organism most amenable to such modelling (2). The principal objective of modelling cancer in mice is to recapitulate the genetic pathogenesis of tumorigenesis, step by step. This objective presumes that tumorigenesis in mice and humans can follow the same track. There are now reasons to believe that this may often be the case. If the genesis of human tumors can be faithfully recapitulated in mice, we can hope to achieve several further aims: to identify all of the genetic players in various forms of malignancy; to reconstruct and understand the molecular pathogenesis of cancer; and to create more realistic settings for the testing of potential carcinogens and for preclinical trials of new therapies.
