Paul Berg assembled the first DNA molecules that combined genes from different organisms. Results of his experiments, published in 1972, represented crucial steps in the subsequent development of recombinant genetic engineering. By stepwise methods such as he devised, individual genes could be isolated and inserted into mammalian cells or into such rapidly growing organisms as bacteria. The genes themselves could then be studied, and their protein products expressed and even manufactured in quantity.
Paul Berg
In creating hybrid DNA molecules, Berg employed the much-studied SV40 monkey virus and a bacterial virus known as the l (or lambda) bacteriophage. The SV40 virus has few genes, lacks a protein coat, and is is convenient to work with. The l bacteriophage normally invades a type of E. coli

Paul Berg (1926 - Present)
Stanley Rice Paul Berg witnessed firsthand the history of recombinant DNA research and regulation, having been in the forefront of both movements since he was a young man. He became a professor of biochemistry at Stanford University School of Medicine in 1959, when he was 33. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences before he was 40, and he gained early recognition and influence when he delineated the key steps in which DNA produces proteins. Berg was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1980 for his work with DNA. In the mid-1970s, the National Academy of Sciences asked Berg to explore the safety of recombinant DNA technology. He responded with the historic "Berg letter," calling for a moratorium on recombinant DNA research until safety issues could be addressed. He was one of the key organizers of the international forum on recombinant DNA technology, the Asilomar Conference, which took place in February of 1975. One hundred leading scientists met at the conference to discuss the potential risks of gene-splicing experiments. The ensuing dialogue resulted in the National Institutes of Health guidelines published a year later, a milestone of responsible self-regulation in science.

Berg, Paul
US molecular biologist. In 1972, using gene-splicing techniques developed by others, Berg spliced and combined into a single hybrid the DNA from an animal tumour virus (SV40) and the DNA from a bacterial virus. For his work on recombinant DNA, he shared the 1980 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
Berg was born in New York and educated at Pennsylvania State University and Case Western Reserve University. Between 1955 and 1974 he held several positions at Washington University.
In 1956 Berg identified an RNA molecule (later known as a transfer RNA) that is specific to the amino acid methionine. He then perfected a method for making bacteria accept genes from other bacteria. This genetic engineering can be extremely useful for creating strains of bacteria to manufacture specific substances, such as interferon. But there are also dangers: a new, highly virulent pathogenic microorganism might accidentally be created, for example. Berg has therefore advocated restrictions on genetic engineering research.

American biochemist who studied the techniques of cutting DNA using gene-sequence specific enzymes, originally innovated by Nathans and Hamilton Smith . Berg was able to improve the technique so that he could create new patterns of genes. This technique is known as recombinant DNA and is the method through which genetic engineering is practiced. Berg shared the 1980 Nobel Prize in chemistry with Sanger and Walter Gilbert. Nathans Sanger Smith (Hamilton)

WIZBANG EXCLUSIVE- Nick Berg gave password to terrorists
This story keeps getting better. A friend called me and told me the AP was going to release a story that Nick Berg was investigated by the FBI 2 years ago because he gave his password for his computer account at his university to terrorist mastermind Zacharias Moussaoui. This guy was dirty. We has over there trying to help the terrorists and they killed him. Then his old man blames Bush? It is not on Drudge or google news but you can bank on it.  The AP has it and you heard it here first. UPDATE: The FBI at the time decided he was not working with Al Qeada but he was just not to careful with his password. It seems bizarre - Al Qaeda stole his password 2 years ago and killed him this week but they are not related in some way? .... I got a bridge to sell you if you believe that one. UPDATE 2: CNN finally has the story an hour or so after Wizbang: UPDATE 3: philly.com has more below the fold. UPDATE 4: Berg's Father, "The al-Qaida people are PROBABLY just as bad as they are, but this administration did this."
