MENACHEM BEGIN. Menachem Begin was one of the most interesting figures in Israeli history. How long was Menachem Begin Prime Minister? When did Begin die?

MENACHEM BEGIN Menachem Begin was one of the most interesting figures in Israeli history. http://www.jajz-ed.org.il/100/people/bios/begin.html Menachem Begin was born in Brest Litovsk (also called Brisk), Poland in 1913. Because he was born on Shabbat Nachamu (the Sabbath of Comfort, which is after the Ninth of Av), he was called Menachem (which means, "he will comfort"). Begin worked his entire life to bring comfort to his people. In 1939, he became head of the Betar movement. When World War Two started, he ran away to Lithuania to escape the Nazis. He was arrested by the Soviets and held in prison. In 1942, he was released and went to the Land of Israel (then called Palestine). At that time, the British were in power there. He joined the Irgun, and eventually became the commander. www.begincenter.org.il At that time, the Jewish People did not control Israel. It did not have an official army. The Irgun was a military group. In addition to helping Jews enter Israel (even though the British did not want them to), they attacked British soldiers. The Irgun even did an incredible prison escape out of the prison in Acco (Acre)!

He studied law at the University of Warsaw. Active in the Zionist movement, he became head of Betar in 1939. When the Germans invaded Poland, he fled to Lithuania, but was arrested and held in a Soviet concentration camp (1940-1941) until he joined a Polish army formed in the USSR to fight the Nazis. By 1942 he was in Palestine, where he became a commander of the Irgun Zvai Leumi, an underground group seeking to oust the British from Palestine by force.

He shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1978 with Anwar Sadat for their efforts towards the Israel-Egypt peace treaty of 1979. In 1981 Begin won a new term of office but his health was failing. The death of his wife in 1982 was a grave blow, resulting in his retirement in September 1983. For the rest of his life he was a virtual recluse. Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Russia (now Brest, in Belarus), studied law in Warsaw, and fled to the USSR in 1939. As leader of the Irgun group, he was responsible in 1946 for a bomb attack at the King David Hotel, Jerusalem, which killed over 100 people.

25. The Altalena Affair
An overview of Irgun's arms smuggling effort, and the military action against its weapons ship which almost resulted in the death of menachem begin.
http://www.us-israel.org/jsource/History/Altalena.html
The Altalena Affair
By Prof. Yehuda Lapidot
The Altalena, purchased by Irgun members abroad, was originally intended to reach Israel on May 15, 1948, loaded with fighters and military equipment. Weapons purchase and organizational matters took longer than expected, however, and the sailing was postponed for several weeks. Meanwhile, on June 1st, an agreement had been signed for the absorption of the Irgun into the IDF and one of the clauses stated that the Irgun had to cease all independent arms acquisition activities. Consequently, representatives of the Israel Government were informed about the ship and its sailing schedule. The Irgun headquarters in Paris did their best to keep the Altalena's preparations for departure a secret, but it was difficult to conceal the movement of 940 fighters and the loading of a large quantity of arms and ammunition. It was feared that if the plans were discovered, attempts might be made to sabotage the Altalena at sea. For this reason, when it raised anchor on June 11th, no cable was sent to the Irgun command in Israel, for fear that it would fall into the wrong hands. These precautionary measures proved fruitless, however, and the following day Radio London reported that the Altalena had sailed from Port-de-Bouc (France) in the direction of Israel with 1,000 Jewish volunteers and a large quantity of weapons on board.

Early in the morning of April 9, 1948, commandos of the Irgun (headed by Menachem Begin) and the Stern Gang attacked Deir Yassin , a village with about 750 Palestinian residents. The village lay outside of the area to be assigned by the United Nations to the Jewish State; it had a peaceful reputation. But it was located on high ground in the corridor between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and according to Plan Dalet, it was to be destroyed and the residents evacuated. In all over 100 men, women, and children were systematically murdered. Fifty three orphaned children were literally dumped along the wall of the Old City where they were found by Miss Hind Husseini and brought behind the American Colony Hotel to her home which was to become the Dar El-Tifl El-Arabi orphanage.

March 9, 1992, Tel Aviv, Israel), Zionist leader and prime minister of Israel from 1977 to 1983. His main achievement was to obtain a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt (1979). For having helped make peace between the two countries, Begin and the president of Egypt, Anwar el-Sadat , were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1978. Begin received a law degree from the University of Warsaw in 1935. Active in the Zionist movement throughout the 1930s, he became (1938) the leader of the Polish branch of the Betar youth movement, dedicated to the establishment of a Jewish state on both sides of the Jordan River. When the Germans invaded Warsaw in 1939, he escaped to Vilnius; his parents and a brother died in concentration camps. The Soviet authorities deported Begin to Siberia in 1940, but in 1941 he was released and joined the Polish army in exile, with which he went to Palestine in 1942. Begin joined the militant Irgun Zvai Leumi and was its commander from 1943 to 1948. After Israel's independence in 1948 the Irgun formed the Herut ("Freedom") Party with Begin as its head and leader of the opposition in the Knesset (Parliament) until 1967. Begin joined the National Unity government (1967-70) as a minister without portfolio and in 1970 became joint chairman of the Likud ("Unity") coalition.
