Menachem Begin
A passionate Zionist from an early age, he joined Ze'ev Jabotinsky's Betar youth movement in his teens, rising quickly to important administrative and leadership positions. By 1936 he was in charge of Betar Czechoslovakia, and in 1938 he became the head of Betar Poland immigrants to Israel , agricultural training, and communications. In 1940, Begin was imprisoned in Siberian labor camps by Josef Stalin's NKVD (a forerunner of the KGB). After the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, he was set free by dint of his Polish citizenship, and joined the Free Polish Army, which in 1943 made its way to for training. Contacting the dormant Jewish underground, Irgun Zvai Leumi , Begin set about planning a Jewish uprising against the British authorities. This began in 1944, but increased in pace and scope immediately after World War II and continued until late 1947. Begin ordered many of the Irgun's operations, including the Akko prison breakout and the destruction of the central British administrative offices in the King David Hotel . Following the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Begin disbanded the Irgun.

But their trips were canceled. While the graveside ceremony for Begin may have been simple, the funeral attracted a crowd of mourners estimated by police at 75,000. Thousands of mourners, many in tears, walked the 2 1/2 miles from the funeral home to the cemetery. A fleet of 50 busses carried others through streets that had been closed to traffic. After the family and dignitaries had left the grave, thousands of onlookers broke through the human chain of police to pay their last respects. Some kissed the freshly dug grave, some saluted and others just laid stones on the mound of earth. Begin had lived a reclusive life since his departure from office nine years ago. But he was frequently hospitalized, twice for a broken hip. His cardiac history antedated his accession to high office. Begin suffered his first heart attack in 1977, the year he led Likud to an upset victory over the long-entrenched Labour Party. After taking office, he was treated for pericarditis, an inflammation of the sac that encloses the heart. Begin was stricken with his final illness on March 3, 1993 when he collapsed in the suburban Tel Aviv home where he lived with his daughter, Leah. He was rushed unconscious to Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, where he was initially diagnosed as having had a stroke. He was placed on a breathing machine in an intensive care unit and regained consciousness after 20 hours in a coma. Doctors had determined by then that he had in fact suffered a heart attack. A pacemaker was implanted in his chest on March 5 to control his irregular heartbeat.

Fighter and leader, Prime Minster of Israel, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize Menachem Begin was born in Brest-Litovsk, Poland. He studied law at the University of Warsaw, and from childhood was a member of the Beitar youth movement, lead by Ze'ev Jabotinsky. Begin maintained a leadership position in the organization, and eventually became its head. After the Nazi conquest of Poland, Begin escaped to Russia, where he was jailed by the authorities on charges of espionage. He was sent to Siberia, and released a year later with all other Polish prisoners. Begin's parents and brother perished in the Holocaust. "Jews must be strong so that there will never be another Holocaust," he said, and was emphatic that the event never be forgotten. He was against German reparation payments after the war, and did not support diplomatic relations between the Israel and Germany. After arriving in the land of Israel, Begin became a commander of Eztel, an underground military organization that fought against the British. In 1946, they blew up part of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, which was then the British Army Headquarters. Ninety British, Arabs, and Jews died, even though advance warning of the attack had been given. The British declared Begin a wanted terrorist, and offered a $50,000 reward to anyone assisting in his capture.
