Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor.     Frå og med året 1986 har ei rad nye elektrisk leiande substansar sett dagens lys i laboratoria rundt i verda, med eigenskapar som i dei føregåande 75 åra berre hadde vore ein framtidsdraum. Det handlar om oppdaging av nye typar superleiarar, dvs elektrisk leiande material som kan oppvise null elektrisk motstand under ein viss såkalla kritisk temperatur T c Den eine nye eigenskapen ved desse materiala, og den viktigaste, var at medan vi tidlegare alltid måtte bruke flytande helium som kjølevæske, dvs kjøle metall og legeringar ned til ca minus 268 grader celcius ( 4,2 K, målt frå det absolutte nullpunkt) for å oppnå superleiande tilstand, så kunne vi nå gå over til å bruke ei langt billegare og lettare tilgjengeleg kjølevæske: flytande nitrogen, LN . Denne har sitt kokepunkt ved minus 196 grader celcius, eller 77 K. Og råstoffet er den lufta vi pustar i, altså gratis. Sidan dei nye materiala typisk oppnår superleiande tilstand ved kjøling til 90 K, eller høgare, var dette eit uhyre viktig framsteg med tanke på teknisk bruk av superleiar, både fordi kjøleteknikken er enklare ved desse temperaturane, og fordi kjøling ved bruk av LN er langt billegare enn bruken av edelgassen He.
