Nobel Laureates Share Novel Thoughts
Four Nobel laureates converged on Singapore early in July to share their leading-edge work during the International Conference on Materials for Advanced Technologies (ICMAT) 2001. Professor Alan J Heeger, Professor Horst L Stormer, Professor Zhores I Alferov, and Dr J Georg Bednorz painted a dynamic picture of the dramatic changes expected to take place in the 21st century in the field of materials. Resources MATERIALS SPECIAL: Nobel Laureates Share Novel Thoughts by Tan Lay Leng Molecules that can self-assemble… Computers powerful enough to play virtual-reality games… Television screens that can be rolled up and put into a pocket… Lasers that emit cold light... hese are a few of the fascinating things to which we can look forward if we gaze into the crystal ball with four of the greatest authorities in the world of materials science. To prove that plastics can be used as flexible-display panels, Professor Alan J Heeger, Chemistry Nobel laureate of 2000, showed a liquid plastic that can conduct electricity and emit light. Contradicting the conventional belief that equates plastic with insulator, the invention represents a new material that will pave the way for next-generation technologies in what Heeger called the "plastic electronics revolution." He said that plastics constitute a special class of materials that carry the optical and electronic properties of semiconductors but also have the processing advantages and mechanical properties of polymers. By altering polymers to create a new class of semiconducting and metallic polymers, the processed materials can be melted down into solutions. This distinctive feature has its attractions because in liquid form, the materials can be processed quickly and easily, offering the possibility of very low-cost manufacturing, he explained.

Nobel Prize winners
against the aggression on Croatia
Many people throughout the world contributed to the international recognition of Croatia (January 15, 1992). We would like to present a list of 104 Nobel prize winners (in alphabetic order) who signed an appeal to stop the aggression of the Yugoslav Army on Croatia that started in 1991 (The New York Times, January 14th, 1992). We do this we the feeling of deepest gratitude.
An Appeal by 104 Nobel Laureates
FOR PEACE IN CROATIA
During the past several weeks the Yugoslav Army has escalated its war against Croatia. Dozens of villages have been razed. Many historical monuments have been destroyed. Several cities, including Croatia's capital of Zagreb, have been bombed. Over 2,000* people have been killed. The undeclared war has already produced more than 100,000* refugees. The violence and destruction unleashed in Croatia is on a scale unknown in Europe since the Second World War. Innocent civilians are massacred. Hospitals and places of worship are destroyed. Conscience demands that we raise our voices against this senseless war.
  • We appeal to the Western and Eastern governments to stop the Yugoslav Army wanton destruction.

Swiss physicist who, along with J. Georg Bednorz, was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for Physics for their joint discovery of superconductivity in certain substances at higher temperatures than had previously been thought attainable.
Muller received his doctorate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in 1958, and beginning in 1963 he performed research in solid-state physics at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, heading the physics department there for several years and becoming an IBM fellow in 1982. The intense research generated by Muller's and Bednorz's discovery raised the prospect that superconductivity could be achieved at temperatures high enough for the generation and transmission of electric power, a feat that would have important economic implications.

Johannes Georg Bednorz
German physicist who, along with Karl Alex Muller, was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize for Physics for their joint discovery of superconductivity in certain substances at temperatures higher than had previously been thought attainable.
Bednorz graduated from the University of Munster in 1976 and earned his doctorate at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich in 1982. That same year he joined the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, where he was recruited by Muller into the latter's studies of superconductivity. In 1983 the two men began systematically testing newly developed ceramic materials known as oxides in the hope that such substances could act as superconductors. In their efforts Bednorz was the experimenter in charge of the actual making and testing of the oxides. In 1986 the two men succeeded in achieving superconductivity in a barium-lanthanum-copper oxide at a temperature of 35 kelvins (-238 C [-396 F]), 12 K higher than the highest temperature at which superconductivity had previously been achieved in any substance.

NOBEL'S GREATEST HITS (7)
Iskalde superledere
