Chairman Henry announced that phosphorescent zinc sulfide placed in the path of rays emanating from a Crookes tube augmented the intensity of rays passing through the aluminum. Elsewhere, M. Niewenglowski recognized that commercial phosphorescent calcium sulfide emits rays which pass through opaque bodies. This fact extends to various phosphorescent bodies, and in particular to uranium salts whose phosphorescence has a very brief duration. With the double sulfate of uranium and potassium, of which I have a few crystals forming a thin transparent crust, I was able to perform the following experiment: One places on the sheet of paper, on the outside, a slab of the phosphorescent substance, and one exposes the whole to the sun for several hours. When one then develops the photographic plate, one recognizes that the silhouette of the phosphorescent substance appears in black on the negative. If one places between the phosphorescent substance and the paper a piece of money or a metal screen pierced with a cut-out design, one sees the image of these objects appear on the negative. One can repeat the same experiments placing a thin pane of glass between the phosphorescent substance and the paper, which excludes the possibility of chemical action due to vapors which might emanate from the substance when heated by the sun's rays.

Descubridor de una nueva propiedad de la materia que recibe el nombre de " radiactividad Descubrió por accidente el fenómeno de la radiactividad en el transcurso de su investigación sobre la fluorescencia. francouzský fyzik Nositel Nobelovy ceny s manžely Curieovými z roku 1905. Narodil se 15. prosince 1852 v Paøíži. Jeho otec i dìdeèek byli pøedními francouzskými fyziky. Vystudoval paøížskou polytechniku. Pozdìji se specializoval na stavbu silnic a mostù. Jeho hlavním zájmem zùstala fyzika. V roce 1895 se stal profesorem fyziky na polytechnice. Zde uèinil svùj nejvýznamnìjší objev. Roku 1896 objevil pøirozenou radioaktivitu. Zajímavé je, že jeho objev je vlastnì následkem jeho chybné hypotézy a náhody. Becquerel se totiž dozvìdìl o objevu paprskù X profesorem Röntgenem a formuloval hypotézu, že vlastnost vysílat pronikavé záøení úzce souvisí s fosforescencí. Tuto hypotézu se rozhodl prokázat experimentem tak, že ozaøoval rùzné látky sluneèním svìtlem a pak je nechal pùsobit na fotografickou desku, aby zjistil jestli opìt vyzaøují - fosforeskují. Kontrolní vzorky neozaøoval, takže by nemìly fosforeskovat. Jako jednu z experimentálních látek si Becquerel (náhodnì?) vybral uranovou sùl, u které se ukázalo, že záøily oba vzorky, bez ohledu na to, jestli byly pøedem osvíceny. Teorie o fosforescenci se hroutila, ale radioaktivita byla objevena. Na poèest profesora Becquerela nese základní jednotka aktivity jeho jméno. Byl èlenem francouzské akademie vìd. Zemøel 25. srpna 1908 v Le Croisic.

Francouzský fyzik Antoine Henri Becquerel se narodil v roce 1852 a již od malièka mìl velmi blízko k fyzice, nebo jeho otec i dìdeèek byli fyzikové. Becquerel vystudoval v roce 1877 polytechniku v Paøíži a po specializaci na stavební škole získal titul inženýra. V roce 1888 obhájil disertaèní práci vìnovanou absorpci svìtla v krystalech a od roku 1895 až do konce svého života byl profesorem fyziky na paøížské polytechnice. Jeho první práce byly z oblasti fyzikální optiky a od roku 1882 zkoumal fosforeskující a fluoreskující látky. Právì pøi zkoumání tìchto látek došlo roku 1896 k jeho životnímu objevu. Mezi zkoumanými látkami byla také uranová sùl, u níž prokázal existenci záøení, které bylo vysíláno pøímo tímto nerostem a nikoli Sluncem vybuzenou fluorescencí. Na základì tohoto pokusu Becquerel zaèal studovat radiaci minerálù a zjistil, že je obdobná paprskùm X, nebo proniká látkou a ionizuje vzduch. Tím vlastnì objevil pøírodní radioaktivitu, což je vlastnost nìkterých prvkù vysílat radioaktivní záøení. V roce 1899 prokázal, že toto záøení lze z pøímého smìru odklonit magnetickým polem, takže musí být alespoò z èásti tvoøeno nabitými èásticemi. Na jeho poèest je pojmenována zákonná jednotka soustavy SI aktivita tìlesa – Becquerel (Bq) je aktivita takového množství radioaktivní látky, ve kterém dojde za 1 sekundu k jedné jaderné pøemìnì.

It emphasizes their contributions to the elucidation of radioactivity and the "key" experiments they performed pertaining to their discoveries. Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (1845-1923) On November 8, 1895, at the University of Wurzburg, Wilhelm Roentgen's attention was drawn to a glowing fluorescent screen on a nearby table. Roentgen immediately determined that the fluorescence was caused by invisible rays originating from the partially evacuated glass Hittorf-Crookes tube he was using to study cathode rays (i.e., electrons). Surprisingly, these mysterious rays penetrated the opaque black paper wrapped around the tube. Roentgen had discovered X rays, a momentous event that instantly revolutionized the field of physics and medicine. However, prior to his first formal correspondence to the University Physical-Medical Society, Roentgen spent two months thoroughly investigating the properties of X rays. Silvanus Thompson complained that Roentgen left "little for others to do beyond elaborating his work." For his discovery, Roentgen received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901. When later asked what his thoughts were at the moment of his discovery, he replied "I didn't think, I investigated. "It was the crowning achievement in a career beset by more than its share of difficulties.
