This is the first year of operation for Beadle Middle School, which has been exciting for all that have had the chance to be involved! Our school is named after George Wells Beadle, who grew up on his family farm near Wahoo, Nebraska. Dr. Beadle earned a bachelor's degree in 1926 and a master's in 1927 from the University of Nebraska. He gained a doctoral degree from Cornell University in 1931. He is credited as the person who laid the foundation for the field of biotechnology. In 1958, he, along with two others, shared the Nobel Prize for physiology and medicine for discovering that each gene determined the structure of a specific enzyme that, in turn, allowed a single chemical reaction to proceed. Dr. Beadle appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1958. Our building opened for the first time to 365 students on Monday, August 20, 2001. The building was dedicated on Sunday, October 14, 2001. The building has been designed as a state-of-the-art educational facility for 750 students in sixth through eighth grade. The design also allows for possible future expansion to a three-unit building, accommodating an enrollment of 1,125 students. The design facilitates and supports a true middle school philosophy including separate suites for each grade level, team teaching, staff conference rooms, and exploratory classrooms central to student access. The building area is 125,155 square feet.

Pioneering cell biologist Hewson Swift, PhD, 1920-2004
January 15, 2004 An internationally recognized expert on electron microscopy, chromosome structure and function, and the use of DNA to study evolutionary relationships, Hewson H. Swift, PhD, the George Wells Beadle Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the departments of molecular genetics and cell biology and pathology, and a member of the committees on genetics and on developmental biology at the University of Chicago, died at the University of Chicago Hospitals on January 1, 2004, from complications of influenza. He was 83. A pioneer in the use of quantitative microscopy, Swift was the first scientist to measure the amount of DNA in various types of cells and in cell components such as mitochondria or chloroplasts, work that helped convince biologists that these organelles had genomes of their own. His finding that nearly all cells from an animal have the same amount of DNA, and that germ cells have half as much, confirmed the principal of DNA constancy and helped bring to an end any lingering skepticism about the genetic role of DNA. He was also one of the founders, in 1960, and later president of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), the most important professional society in the field.

Genome project opens the book on human evolution

Like an enormous library, the human genome project now awaits the work of a generation of scientists who will catalogue and organize its contents and begin to read and understand its secrets. Researchers at the University of Chicago open the book on human molecular evolution with a paper in the February 12, 2001, issue of Nature Evolutionary genomics, using computational analysis of whole genomes to directly address important questions about evolutionary biology, can now be applied to the understanding of human genes and their regulatory sequences. "In this first exploration of the human genome data, we addressed questions interesting to molecular evolution that could be answered in some detail in a short time frame," said Wen-Hsiung Li , Ph.D., George Wells Beadle Distinguished Service Professor in the department of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago. One of the puzzles of human evolution has been the much higher percentage of repetitive DNA, stretches of DNA that are not genes but that share the same sequence of base pairs, in human than in other invertebrate genomes. The function of this so-called "junk DNA" has been a mystery. These repetitive elements (transposable elements) are found so frequently in our genome mainly because they are inserted more frequently into our genome than they can be got rid of, not because they confer advantage to us.
