Sedan 1999 utses medicine och odontologie hedersdoktorer av Styrelsen för forskning i dess egenskap av fakultetsnämnd. Sammanlagt har drygt 260 hedersdoktorer utsetts genom åren (varav 7% kvinnor). Under åren 1990-2004 utsågs sammanlagt 58 hedersdoktorer, varav ca. 22 % kvinnor. Vem kan utses till hedersdoktor? Dels akademiker som genom vetenskapliga insatser eller på annat sätt betytt mycket för forskningen vid Karolinska Institutet, dels personer som inte uppnått doktorsexamen genom formella prestationer men som på andra sätt gynnat forskning och utveckling. Det finns dock några begränsande regler när det gäller vem som kan utses till hedersdoktor, t.ex. kan den som redan är medicine doktor efter avlagda prov vid ett svenskt universitet ej utses till medicine hedersdoktor vid ett annat svenskt universitet. Vidare bör den som exempelvis utsetts till medicine hedersdoktor vid ett svenskt universitet ej tilldelas samma värdighet vid ett annat svenskt universitet. Nedan följer en förteckning över samtliga medicine och odontologie hedersdoktorer som utsetts under åren 1910-2004 vid Karolinska Institutet. En medicine hedersdoktor har titeln MDhc, medicine doctor honoris causa, och en odontologie hedersdoktor har titeln ODhc, odontologie doctor honoris causa.
