Lewis Black at the Baltimore Improv
Last night we made it out to see Lewis Black at the Baltimore Improv An angrier man, I have yet to see. :) One thing though. As I am sure you are all aware, at every comedy show, there must be at least one cackler . Last night's cackler was two tables over from us. Jenn was about ready to get up out of her seat and go over to the cackler and "inform" her of how loud she was being. Other than that, we had a blast. And after looking at the upcoming schedule there, I have a feeling we will be back a number of times in the next couple months. Posted by rayners at June 16, 2003 11:07 PM

Issue #79, January/February 1995
No Vacancy!
Denial, Fear and the Rumor Mill Waged a War Against Moving to Opportunity in Baltimore's Suburbs
By David Moberg Moving To Opportunity (MTO), as the Housing and Urban Development program was called, will continue in the five cities initially designated despite elimination of what would have been a second round of experiments. HUD also hopes to implement a broader Choice in Residency project that will make counseling on housing opportunities available to recipients of housing subsidies through the Section 8 voucher and certificate programs. But the Baltimore experience suggests the problematic politics of any strategy to fight poverty through housing mobility, a policy that HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros favors. Moving To Opportunity was quietly slipped into the Housing and Community Development Act of 1992 through the lobbying efforts of Alex Polikoff, the public interest lawyer who brought the original Gautreaux lawsuit. But then HUD Secretary Jack Kemp embraced the idea, which finally was launched under the Clinton administration. MTO and Choice in Residency are partly responses to the strong evidence in many metropolitan areas, including Chicago, that Section 8 housing vouchers have led to reconcentration of poor blacks in suburbs. This pattern does not simply reflect conscious choice. Yet the problem is not only lingering discrimination but also inadequate knowledge of suburban housing markets and lack of confidence of many low-income blacks. Partly under the influence of sociologist Douglas Massey, co-author of

David Harvey first joined the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering as an Associate Professor of Geography in 1969 (he was promoted to Full Professor in 1973). Prior to that he had taught in the Geography Department at the University of Bristol in England. From 1987 to 1993 he was the Halford Mackinder Professor of Geography in the University of Oxford but in 1993 he returned full time to Hopkins. During the 1960s, he worked mainly on problems of methodology and philosophy of geography while maintaining a strong interest in research in historical geography. This phase of his work culminated with the publication in 1969 of a major methodological work on Explanation in Geography. His move to the United States and to the Johns Hopkins and to Baltimore in particular coincided with a shift of research emphasis away from the positivism of the earlier years and into an exploration of more dialectical and Marxist ways of thinking, most particularly as these related to urbanization and the crises of impoverishment and racism then facing many US cities (including, of course, Baltimore which has always remained a key to much of his research activity and interests ever since). This culminated in the publication of Social Justice and the City in 1973.

Edgar's cousin Neilson Poe, who lived in Baltimore and had married Virginia's half-sister, offered to take in both Virginia and Maria. Edgar, fearing that he was losing his little family, proposed to Virginia in a remarkably emotional letter (August 29, 1835, Ostrom, Letters , pp. 69-71). She accepted and by October 7, 1835 Virginia and Maria moved with Poe to Richmond. This building was saved from demolition in 1941 by the Edgar Allan Poe Society of Baltimore.

Mora is better... no, make that the best
It's not often that an Oriole wins the American League Player of the Month award, as Melvin Mora has done for his scalding month of May at the plate. MLB.com Mora named AL Player of the Month Baltimore Sun Mora adds Player of Month to All-Star bid Mora's .402 batting average, .480 on-base percentage, and .701 slugging percentage last month all led the league. For the season, he's at .377/.459/.598. He ranks first in the league in batting average and runs scored, and he's second in OBP, fourth in slugging, and ninth in RBI. Needless to say, those numbers represent a phenomenal level of production, comparable to what he accomplished in the first half of last year. Yet Mora is still not making much of an impact on the national radar. In the first month of All-Star voting, for example, he did not get enough votes to be listed among the top five AL third basemen, according to numbers released Tuesday by the Associated Press Continue reading "Mora is better... no, make that the best"
