David Baltimore
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
David Baltimore (born 1938) is an American biologist and a winner of the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. He received the Nobel prize in 1975, at the age of 37. His Nobel prize work involved the discovery that RNA can be transcribed (by reverse transcriptase ) into DNA , upsetting what was until the early 70's a widely held dogma: that DNA led to RNA, which in turn led solely to proteins For most people outside of science, Baltimore is most well known for his role in a science misconduct case. Baltimore was forced to retract a paper that he published with Thereza Imanishi-Kari in 1986. Baltimore has profound influence on national policy in matters concerning recombinant DNA research and the AIDS epidemic. As of 2004 , Baltimore is president of the California Institute of Technology (since 1997).

David Byrne
David Byrne was born in Dumbarton, Scotland, on 14 May 1952. When he was 2 years old, his parents moved to Canada at the expense of a company that was recruiting engineers and semi-scientists from Europe. When David was 8 or 9 years old, his parents moved again, this time to the suburbs of Baltimore, Maryland. In September 1970, David went straight from High School to the Rhode Island School Of Design. It was here that he met Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth who were also enrolled as Freshmen. David was not very impressed by art school: " I think art school is a real racket, especially in this country. You run into a couple of good teachers and some interesting students but for the amount of money you spend, it's not worth it At Rhode Island School Of Design, David studied a functional design programme known as the Bauhaus Theory course. He also took a conceptual art course. The staff were not sure about David, particularly when he put on a performance in which he had his hair and beard shaved off onstage to a piano accordion accompaniment and a showgirl displaying cue cards written in Russian. The professors at RISD were less charmed, however, and David found himself out on the street. He had been at the RISD for one year.

David Baltimore
American virologist who shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1975 with Howard M. Temin and Renato Dulbecco. Working independently, Baltimore and Temin discovered reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that synthesizes DNA from RNA. Baltimore also conducted research that led to an understanding of the interaction between viruses and the genetic material of the cell. The research of all three men contributed to an understanding of the role of viruses in the development of cancer.
Baltimore and Temin both studied the process by which certain tumour-causing RNA viruses (those whose genetic material is composed of RNA) replicate after they infect a cell. They simultaneously demonstrated that these RNA viruses, now called retroviruses, contain the blueprint for an unusual enzymea polymerase called reverse transcriptasethat copies DNA from an RNA template. The newly formed viral DNA then integrates into the infected host cell, an event that can transform the infected cell into a cancer cell. Baltimore received his undergraduate degree in chemistry from Swarthmore College, Pennsylvania (B.A., 1960), and went on to study animal virology at the Rockefeller Institute (now Rockefeller University) in New York City, where he obtained his doctorate in 1964, and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston. He worked with Dulbecco at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, Calif. (1965-68), studying the mechanism of replication of the poliovirus.

David Baltimore
David Baltimore of Massachusetts Institute of Technology was accused of publishing a paper containing data allegedly forged by an associate, Dr. Imanishi-Kari. The case has been under investigation for more than 10 years. Its longevity can probably be ascribed to a combination of Baltimore's fame as a Nobel Prize winner, and the eagerness of Rep. John Dingell (D. Mich.) to prosecute him.
But also at stake is the credibility of a whistleblower, Margot O'Toole, who reported the alleged misdeed. The personalities involved eclipse the crime.

http://www.nobel.se/medicine/laureates/1975/baltimore-autobio.html
My interest in Biology began when I was a high school student and spent a summer at the Jackson Memorial Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. There I first experienced research biology and saw research biologists at work; this experience led me to become a biology major in college.
I went on to Swarthmore College where I began as a major in biology but switched to chemistry later so that I could carry out a research thesis. Between my last two years at Swarthmore I spent a summer at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories working with Dr. George Streisinger, and the experience of working with and watching that great teacher led me to molecular biology.
I started graduate school at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in biophysics, but when I decided to work on animal viruses I left M.I.T. to study for a summer with Dr. Philip Marcus at the Albert Einstein Medical College and to take the animal virus course at Cold Spring Harbor, then taught by Dr. Richard Franklin and Dr. Edward Simon. I joined Dr. Franklin at the Rockefeller Institute to do my thesis work and then continued in animal virology as a postdoctoral fellow with Dr.
