Cultural Feminism
A third major theorist of cultural feminism, Otis Tufton Mason, strongly influenced Addams' social thought and is discussed in the next section. All these theorists were part of a school of thought that was never viable in male American sociology. For female American sociologists, however, cultural feminism became the cornerstone of their thought. Almost all women sociologists trained before 1915 were cultural feminists. [6] This branch of feminist thought suffered a severe blow immediately prior to, during, and after World War I. Most of these women theorists opposed the war on the basis that military values were destructive, masculine, and inferior to the more socially advanced feminine values of cooperation and pacifism. Addams, as the leading spokesperson for this view, was also the leading target. Pacifism was only one component in a complex set of assumptions made by cultural feminists, but its threat to patriarchal violence caused a savage response, and repression of this theory soon followed.

War and Peace
Jamaica Plain, November 16, 2002, Terry Burke
We face the prospect of war. New York Times correspondent Chris Hedges, speaking recently on the PBS television interview program of Charlie Rose, spoke of war as "imminent" and that we were going into it "blind." In his excellent book, War is a Force That Gives us Meaning, Chris writes, "the moral certitude of the state in time of war is a kind of fundamentalism." We are entering such a world, where the response to a real terrorist threat has led to an erosion of our civil liberties. The book is a powerful confession of the addictive quality of war, not only for soldiers, but war corespondents, aid workers, and society in general. I am thankful that public opinion and the calmer council of Secretary of State Colin Powell has led the Bush administration to seek the offices of the UN to destroy Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. Certainly the destruction of those weapons would be a good thing. However, already we see fall-out from a potential war in Turkey, where a secular, pro-Western Muslim democracy, a strong ally of Israel, has voted for the first time to create an Islamist government in Ankara. Such a government will create serious problems for the Jewish, Armenian and Greek minorities in Turkey.

The MACDONALD COLLECTION
The Rime of the Ancient Mariner by Coleridge illustrated by Willy Pogany:"This edition is limited to 25 copies ...signed by Willy Pogany" , one of approximately 10,000 monographs of largely 18 th to 20 th century British literary works in the Library’s oldest and most important special collection. Named for its donor William MacDonald (1877 -1959) of Sydney, Nova Scotia, the collection is rich with books from small presses, limited editions, illustrated books, including over 60 volumes decorated with fore-edge paintings, and fine bindings. The LESBIAN PULP FICTION COLLECTION The Library has one of the largest collections of lesbian pulp fiction, a genre which flourished during the pre-Stonewall era of 1950s and 1960s America when the public’s fascination with the sexual and societal outlaw in books and movies contended with rigorous legal and political sanctions and the celebration of conformity in magazines and on television. The vivid (and prurient) cover art attracted seekers of affirmation (and titillation).
