Axelrod, Pavel (1850-1928) One of the founders of the Russian Emancipation of Labour group. After the Second Congress of the RSDLP he became a Menshevik . A Centrist during WWI. Pavel Axelrod was born in Chernigov, Russia, in 1850. Influenced by the writings of Bakunin, he established a socialist group of students in Kiev, and contributed to the radical journals, Worker and Commune In 1877 he joined the Land and Liberty. Three years later the group split into two factions. The majority of members, who favoured a policy of terrorism, established the People's Will. Axelrod and George Plekhanov established the Black Repartition group that rejected terrorism and supported a socialist propaganda campaign among workers and peasants. Axelrod went with George Plekhanov to live in Switzerland and in 1883 they established the Liberation of Labour group. In March, 1898, the various Marxist groups in Russia united to form the Social Democratic Labour Party (SDLP). The party was banned in Russia so most of its leaders were forced to live in exile. Axelrod became co-editor of Iskra . It was printed in several European cities and then smuggled into Russia by a network of SDLP agents. At the Second Congress of the Social Democratic Labour Party in London in 1903, there was a split between supporters of Lenin and those of Martov. Lenin's a faction known as the Bolsheviks, Martov's the Mensheviks.

71. History Of Xenobiotic Metabolism
The wideranging role that this enzyme system has in drug metabolism was uncoveredby julius axelrod. 261-36(1994), julius axelrod-Ann.Rev.Pharm.Tox.
http://www.issx.org/hisoct.html
History of Xenobiotic Metabolism In Vitro Technology Early studies of drug metabolism indicated the central role of the liver in modifying ingested substances. As the only organ positioned between the intestine and the systemic circulation the liver was the logical site of metabolism. History of Drug Metabolism- Year 2000 Review Techniques to examine the role of the liver in vitro arose with the development of nondestructive homogenization procedures by Potter and Elvehjem in 1936 and the utilization of differential centrifugation for the separation of liver organelles initially developed by Claude and Schneider . Gerald Mueller, working in the laboratory of James and Elizabeth Miller applied these techniques to the study of the metabolism of dimethylaminoazobenzene. This rat carcinogen had been shown by the Millers to bind to the liver and they sought to explore in vitro the pathways of metabolism that had originally been described by Stevenson and co-workers . Mueller and Miller showed that DAB was metabolized by rat liver homogenates and required oxygen and a reductant NADPH The wide-ranging role that this enzyme system has in drug metabolism was uncovered by Julius Axelrod. At the age of 35 Axelrod initiated a long and illustrious career at NIH where he began his studies on sympathomimetic amines and, in particular, amphetamine. Axelrod was fascinated by the rabbitÕs ability to rapidly metabolize amphetamine and wanted to find the mechanism of these conversions. When he broached his concern about lack of training in enzymology to co-worker Gordon Tomkins
