En 1881 se trasladó a Estocolmo, y bajo la supervisión de Erik Edlung, llevó a cabo investigaciones sobre la polarización eléctrica y la conductividad de las disoluciones. En 1883, Arrhenius propuso que ciertas sustancias (electrólitos) se convertían en activas y conductoras (iones) cuando se hallaban en disolución; en el caso de los ácidos y las bases, su fuerza dependía directamente del grado de disociación que presentaban.
