ARAFAT APPROVED ATTACK ON U.S. CONVOY RAMALLAH [MENL] The United States has determined that Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat approved an attack on a U.S. embassy convoy in which three Americans were killed in 2003. U.S. diplomatic sources said a U.S. investigation into the bombing of the embassy convoy in the Gaza Strip in October 2003 pointed to a clear role by Arafat. The sources said Arafat granted approval to a plan to strike U.S. interests in PA areas. Arafat, the sources said, did not draft or approve any details for a Palestinian attack. But they said Arafat agreed to a proposal relayed by a high-level aide for the Palestinians to "pass a message" to the United States. According to the sources, a senior Arafat aide and member of the Fatah Central Committee left Gaza City for Arafat's headquarters in Ramallah in September 2003 to seek approval for a Palestinian attack on U.S. interests in the area. The Fatah official, described as a liasion between Arafat and Palestinian insurgents in the Gaza Strip, complained of U.S. policy toward the PA and Arabs. NOTE: The above is not the full item.

Bio : Yasser Arafat OAS_AD('Top'); Bio : Yasser Arafat Thursday, January 16, 2003 Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has spent most of his 72 years in exile. Born in Cairo (although others claim he was born in Gaza or in Jerusalem) to a wealthy Palestinian family in 1929, the boy born Mohammed Abdul-Rauf Arafat Qudwa Al-Husseini, nicknamed "Yasser" ("Easy") by his mother, divided his childhood between Egypt and his mother's family in Jerusalem. OAS_AD('Middle'); Arafat became involved in politics at an early age, smuggling weapons from Egypt to Palestine in the last years of the British mandate and fighting against the nascent state of Israel in 1948. Arafat returned to Egypt after the Arab defeat to study engineering, deciding against an earlier plan to attend the University of Texas. After getting his degree in 1951, he worked in Egypt for a time, then moved to Kuwait in 1956 to be a public-works engineer, eventually becoming head of his own company. All the while continuing his political activities, Arafat and others founded the Fatah organization in Kuwait in 1958. In 1965, after 17 years abroad, he returned to the West Bank, then administered by Jordan, to carry out guerrilla and terrorist attacks on Israel. After the disastrous defeat of the June 1967 Six-Day War, during which the West Bank and Gaza Strip came under Israeli control, the Arab states which had formed the Palestine Liberation Organization as a puppet group in 1964 lost credibility. Control of the umbrella organization passed to indigenous Palestinian groups and Arafat, as head of the largest bloc, became head of the PLO's executive committee, a position he has held ever since.

    Yasser Arafat and Gerry Adams
Caught in the Middle of the Struggle for Peace
    By Jennifer Hitchcock
Staff Writer and Copy Editor The governments in Isreal and Britain cannot afford to alienate Arafat and Adams; their influence over residents in their territories is still substantial, and their understanding of the motivations behind the radical elements within their movements is a valuable negotiating tool. Whether or not the peace processes in each of these countries continues depends on Arafat's and Adam's involvement. However, the governments should have more realistic expectations of what Arafat and Adams can do about radical organizations within their territories which seek to destroy efforts to achieve peace. If there will ever be peace in these countries, the governments, with Yasser Arafat and Gerry Adams in close contact, need to continue down the same path on which they started despite the senseless acts of violence which have provoked many citizens to call for an end to peace negotiations altogether.

A Covenant Between the Pope and PLO Leader Yasser Arafat
Against the G-d and People of Israel and Jerusalem
On 15th February, 2000 at the Vatican, the Pope and the leader of the PLO terrorist organisation, Yasser Arafat, signed a covenant against the G-d and people of Israel and Jerusalem. It was a covenant between two enemies of Israel who for a long time would rather have Israel disappear from the Promised Land as soon as possible. According to this agreement, Jerusalem should be an international city based on international resolutions and an international guarantee. (The UN decided on more than one occasion that Jerusalem should be an international city.) They also decided that any step or activity taken by Israel to change this position of Jerusalem is against the law. The agreement also recognises a "Palestinian" state in the land of Israel and agrees on cooperation between the Vatican and the PLO and the Vatican committed itself to assist the so-called "Palestinians". Authorities in the Vatican explained: "the agreement paves the way for establishment of full diplomatic relations with a Palestinian state when it is founded". The PLO representative in the Vatican stated: "This is an historical covenant". It is no accident that this covenant was signed one month before the Pope's visit to Israel. The agreement is part of the long-term policy of the Vatican against Israel ever since the State of Israel was founded. This is a continuation of the historical hostility of the Vatican against the Jewish people. The Jewish people in the exile, mainly in Europe, and later also in South America have been persecuted by the Popes and the Roman Catholic Church and many millions were killed in terrible ways during the Inquisition, the pogroms and, in our time, in the Holocaust when 6 million Jews were killed including 1.5 million children and babies. During the Holocaust the Pope did not even try to prevent this killing or even state that he was against it. He was silent.

PLO Chairman Yasser Arafat's First Appearance at the United Nations
    By Donald Neff
It was 20 years ago that the United States and Israel suffered one of their greatest diplomatic defeats, and the Palestinians and the United Nations one of their greatest victories. The occasion came on Nov. 13, 1974, when Chairman Yasser Arafat of the Palestine Liberation Organization made a dramatic appearance before the U.N. General Assembly and called on the world community to decide between an "olive branch or a freedom fighter's gun." Arafat declared: "The difference between the revolutionary and the terrorist lies in the reason for which each fights. Whoever stands by a just cause and fights for liberation from invaders and colonialists cannot be called terrorist. Those who wage war to occupy, colonize and oppress other people are the terrorists....The Palestinian people had to resort to armed struggle when they lost faith in the international community, which ignored their rights, and when it became clear that not one inch of Palestine could be regained through exclusively political means....

    BACK TO NRO

    Yasser Arafat, Zionist
    A new history of victimization.
By Steven Menashi, assistant editor, Policy Review
November 8, 2001 9:10 a.m. Arafat has worked hard to establish Palestinian sympathy with the victims of terrorism. After the Trade Center attacks, the Palestinian Authority required its schoolchildren to observe a moment of silence, and organized a candlelight vigil outside the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem. On September 12, Arafat donated blood for injured Americans at a Gaza hospital. The Palestinian Authority promoted coverage of the spectacle, which helped to deflect public attention from the revelry in the Palestinian street. To be sure, the Palestinian Authority's newest media initiative masks popular support for terrorism, which is at least more widespread than Palestinian officials are willing to admit. But terrorist-turned-victim Arafat is primarily concerned with preserving his newer, more agreeable face in the West. Arafat effected this dramatic shift in public opinion by recasting the image of the Palestinian national movement. The PLO stopped presenting itself as a guerilla army, aimed at wiping Israel off the map, and instead adopted the pose of a humanitarian effort aimed at protecting a beleaguered minority, the Palestinian Arabs, and establishing a homeland for a dispossessed people. In short, Arafat presented the Palestinians to the world as Jews.

    Should Yasser Arafat Go?
    CNN's The Point
    April 2, 2002
THE POINT. Now from New York, Anderson Cooper.
ANDERSON COOPER, CNN HOST: Good evening. Thanks for joining us tonight on THE POINT. Israel wants him to go. His defenders say no way would it really make a difference.
"Flashpoint": Arafat's fate. Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon today suggested Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat can take a one-way ticket into exile anywhere he wants. Arafat wants to stay, even though he remains besieged in his headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
About 200 people emerged from the compound and surrendered today. Israel says it is going after the Palestinian terror infrastructure. Palestinians say Israel is practicing terror by occupying and attacking their land.
Should Arafat go? If he won't go willingly should he be forced to go, and does anyone have the right to make him leave?
Joining us from Philadelphia, tonight, Daniel Pipes, he's director of the Middle East Forum. And in Washington, James Zogby of the Arab-American Institute. Thank you very much for being with us, both of you. Tonight, there is basically two questions that I think we want to get to. Should Arafat be exiled and could he be? Would it be effective? Would it do more harm than good? Would it actually do any good at all?

Will Yasser Arafat try to stop suicide bombings?
    MSNBC Hardball with Chris Matthews
    May 9, 2002
CHRIS MATTHEWS, host: Here it is, THE BIG STORY tonight. Are the Palestinians serious about cracking down on Hamas and other terrorist groups? In a televised address yesterday, Yasser Arafat issued his second condemnation of terrorism in less than 12 hours. He said, quote, "I gave my orders and directions to all the Palestinian security forces to confront and prevent all terror attacks against Israeli civilians from any Palestinian side or parties and at the same time to confront any aggression or attack on Palestinian civilians, whether by Israeli soldiers or settlers, which we all condemn." But yesterday, Arafat's chief representative in the United States, Hasan Abdel Rahman, told me right here on HARDBALL that it wasn't the job of Arafat to prevent terror attacks on Israelis. Here's what he said. Mr. HASAN ABDEL RAHMAN (Palestinian Chief Representative to US): His function is to achieve liberty and freedom for this people and not to become a policeman for Israel.

Kerry's latest flip-flop: He "expressed the opposite view eight days ago, when he told Jewish leaders in New York that he shares President Bush's belief that Arafat must be isolated because he's not a 'partner for peace' - much less a statesman." In his book "The New War," which like his scandalous 1971 book, "The New Soldier," is out of print, Kerry claimed: "Terrorist organizations with specific political agendas may be encouraged and emboldened by Yasser Arafat's transformation from outlaw to statesman." He added that terrorists "whose only object is to disrupt society require no such 'role models'" as Arafat.

    Yasser Arafat a Moroccan Jew?
At least that is what a new book published in Syria says. According to the book, written b y a top PLO member, Arafat’s father Arrived to Jerusalem from a village in Morocco populated mostly by Jews. The author claims that a cousin of Arafat confirmed that Arafat changed his last name trying to hide his Jewish Moroccan roots. The author also writes what has been known for a long time that Arafat was born in Cairo not in Jerusalem. Arafat’s father was married to an Arab woman from Jerusalem but Arafat was not born there. Another thing the book says is that Arafat is not related, as he claims, to the infamous/ famous Husseini family from Jerusalem. As for being from Moroccan origin the book quotes Morocco’s former Foreign Affairs minister that as far as he knows Arafat is from that Moroccan village. (all of the above freely translated from Israeli news site Ynet The readers of Ynet had some funny conclusions: If Arafat is a Jew it will explain many things. For example it explains why Arafat refused to accept Barak and Clinton plan to give land to the Palestinians. It would also explain why he leads the Palestinians to chaos. Why he encourages suicide bombings that causes more and more people to loathe the Palestinians. Another thing: If Arafat is a Jew and he lives in the West Bank, does that make him a settler? Update: Ma’ariv adds more info from that book. It is claimed that Arafat ordered the killing of a French engineer, which was presumably related to Arafat’s Moroccan side, in order to prevent the Frenchman to reveal Arafat’s true identity. The French engineer was killed from a landmine explosion, a hit executed by Sudanese assassinators. This all thing, that was extremely dubious to begin with, is becoming more and more of a joke. At least it’s a good one.

The Agenda Comment A Brief History of Yasir Arafat The PLO leader is a terrible administrator but a brilliant image crafter by David Brooks Obviously, Arafat is a congenital liar. But there's more to it than that: his lies are all designed to create an aura of romance around himself and the Palestinian people. Arafat is the most bizarre political leader in the world today, in that he has obliterated all considerations of ordinary living and has fused himself completely with his cause. He's never had anything like a regular home life. He has no interest in comforts, possessions, or normal pleasures. He has no interest in social issues, books, or cultural matters. Aburish says that Arafat has been to a restaurant exactly once in the past forty years. The life of total political commitment has turned him into a surpassingly strange creature, and he has a rapacious hunger to possess the Palestinian cause entirely by himself.
