Encyclopedia Annan, Kofi Atta [k O E u n] Pronunciation Key Annan, Kofi Atta In 1997, Annan succeeded Boutros Boutros-Ghali as secretary-general, becoming the first sub-Saharan African to hold the office; he was elected to a second five-year term in 2001. Accessible and affably candid, combining idealism with realism, he has generally been an effective consensus-builder. Annan has particularly emphasized the UN's traditional obligations in the area of human rights and the newer challenges of the HIV/AIDS pandemic and international terrorism. Durch unsere Arbeit auf dem Gebiet der Entwicklung, der Friedenssicherung, der Umwelt und der Gesundheit helfen wir Nationen und Gemeinschaften beim Aufbau einer besseren Zukunft. Vor allem aber bekennen wir uns zu der Idee, dass jeder Einzelne - unabhängig von Geschlecht, Volkszugehörigkeit oder Rasse - Anspruch darauf hat, dass seine Menschenrechte weder verletzt noch missachtet werden. Diese Idee ist in der Charta der Vereinten Nationen und in der Allgemeinen Erklärung der Menschenrechte verankert. Am Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts wissen wir, dass keine Nation, keine Gemeinschaft und keine Gesellschaft wirklich frei sein kann, wenn die Rechte des Einzelnen nicht geachtet werden. As Secretary-General, Mr. Annan has given priority to revitalizing the UN through a comprehensive programme of reform; strengthening the Organization's traditional work in the areas of development and the maintenance of international peace and security; advocating human rights, the rule of law and the universal values of equality, tolerance and human dignity; restoring public confidence in the Organization by reaching out to new partners and, in his words, by "bringing the United Nations closer to the people". The Secretary-General has also taken a leading role in mobilizing the international community in the battle against HIV/AIDS, and more recently against the global terrorist threat. Born in Kumasi, Ghana, on 8 April 1938, Mr. Annan studied at the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi and completed his undergraduate work in economics at Macalester College in the United States in 1961. From 1961 to 1962, he undertook graduate studies in economics at the Institut universitaire des hautes études internationales in Geneva. As a 1971- 1972 Sloan Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Mr. Annan received a Master of Science degree in management.

Putting aside faceless statistics like per capita gross domestic product or export-import figures, the report burrows into the facts about what children eat, who goes to school, whether there is clean water to drink, how women share in the economy or who doesn't get vaccinations against diseases that go on killing even though they are preventable. This year, the report takes its first look at what people have from simple toilets to family cars and what proportion of the world's goods and services are consumed, comparatively, by the rich and by the poor. The pie is huge the world's consumption bill is $24 trillion a year but some servings are very small indeed. THE HAVES The richest fifth of the world's people consumes 86 percent of all goods and services while the poorest fifth consumes just 1.3 percent. Indeed, the richest fifth consumes 45 percent of all meat and fish, 58 percent of all energy used and 84 percent of all paper, has 74 percent of all telephone lines and owns 87 percent of all vehicles. NATURAL RESOURCES Since 1970, the world's forests have declined from 4.4 square miles per 1,000 people to 2.8 square miles per 1,000 people.
