Angell, Sir Norman (1872-1967), British economist and pacifist, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1933. Born in England, in his youth Angell worked as a cowboy and prospector in the American West, and then as a reporter for the St. Louis Globe-Democrat and the San Francisco Chronicle. During his stay in the United States, Angell was disturbed by the antipathy of the Americans toward Britain. He generalized that prejudicial attitudes on the part of society and the fallacious belief in the gains from war had a negative impact on international affairs. Angell developed his thesis in the book, The Great Illusion , published in 1910. The illusion is the mistaken idea that by success in a war a nation-state might destroy or incorporate the economic power of the enemy state and thus expand its own. Angell argued that national wealth in the modern world is so interdependent in terms of international finance and trade that military conquest could only destroy the very foundations of it. The inability to understand the economic interdependence and the effects of war fuels the self-destructive forces of militarism, challenging peace and prosperity. Angell's thesis has been subsequently challenged, but it had a great impact at the time. Angell also wrote other books on issues of peace and war. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1933 in recognition of the originality of his thought and the depth of his dedication to the cause of world peace. Angell was manager of the Paris edition of the London

At the time Andrew Carnegie, whom later generations would remember more as a philanthropist than as an industrialist, was moved to prophesy, "Ere the 20th century closes, the earth will be purged of its foulest shame, the killing by men in battle under the name of war." Career
Ralph Norman Angell Lane was born on December 26, 1872 in Holbeach, Lincolnshire. He died on October 7, 1967 in Croydon, Surrey.
He was brought up in a well to do but unpretentious middle class household. His father, Thomas Angell Lane, had established a chain of local shops before retiring to become a gentleman magistrate with a taste for French classics. He quietly encouraged Ralph Norman in his precocious reading of political texts.
The young Angell attended elementary schools in England, but had the good fortune to be sent to a French Lycee at St Omer. Having escaped the confining influences of the conventional English public (that is private) boarding school, he found himself at the age of 17 editing a bi-weekly English language newspaper in Geneva, catering mainly for tourists. Simultaneously he was taking courses at Geneva University.
He was, however, essentially self taught. He happened to read John Stuart Mill's On Liberty during an illness at the age of 12 and this was for a long time his guiding light. But he also devoured the work of other "public intellectuals", such as Voltaire, Huxley, Spencer and Carlyle.

"Savants Select Most Influential Volumes," English Journal 25 (1936). [25 selections each by Edward Weeks, editor of the Atlantic Monthly Press ; Charles A. Beard, historian; John Dewey, philosopher]
Malcolm Cowley and Bernard Smith, Books That Changed Our Minds (1939). [12 selections]
Horace Shipp, Books That Moved the World (1945). [10 selections]
Robert B. Downs, Books That Changed the World (1956) [16 selections] Note: Some of these lists were compiled with restrictions. Dewey, Weeks, and Beard were asked to "select the twenty-five most influential books published in the last fifty years." This means between 1874 and 1936. Downs, on the other hand, writes, "For practical reasons, it was arbitrarily decided to restrict the discussion to books in science and the social sciences, omitting such vastly important fields as religion, philosophy, and literature." Wilfred Owen (1893-1918) "..as the only possible policy in our day for a conqueror to pursue is to leave the wealth of a territory in the complete possession of the individuals inhabiting that territory, it is a logical fallacy and an optical illusion in Europe to regard a nation as increasing its wealth when it increases its territory, because when a proivince or state is annexed, the population, who are the real and only owners of the wealth therein, are alo annexed, and the conqueror gets nothing. . . .Even where territory is not formally annexed, the conqueror is unable to take the wealth of the conquered territory owing to the delicate interdependence of the financial world (an outcome of our credit and banking systems), which makes the financial and industrial security of the victor dependent upon financial and industrial security in all considerable civilized centres."
