Anderson, Philip Warren US physicist who shared the 1977 Nobel Prize for Physics with his senior colleague John Van Vleck for his theoretical work on the behaviour of electrons in magnetic, noncrystalline solids. Anderson was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, and educated at Harvard University. In 1949 he joined Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, and later took on additional academic posts. In the early 1960s he investigated the interatomic effects that influence the magnetic properties of metals and alloys, devising a theoretical model (now called the Anderson model) to describe the effect of the presence of an impurity atom in a metal. He also described the movements of impurities within crystalline substances by a method now known as Anderson localization. In addition, Anderson has studied the relationship between superconductivity, superfluidity, and laser action, and predicted the existence of resistance in superconductors. His studies of disordered glassy solids indicate that they could be used instead of the expensive crystalline semiconductors now used in many electronic devices, such as computer memories, electronic switches, and solar energy converters.

Anderson "Cerca del ochenta por ciento de los físicos que realizan investigación no se clasifican a ellos mismos como físicos cósmicos o físicos de las partículas elementales y no estan, del todo, preocupados en poner a prueba 'leyes fundamentales'. Obviamente, una cierta porción de este 80% se dedican a las aplicaciones de la física en varios problemas prácticos, como por ejemplo los geofísicos que prospectan o los diseñadores de dispositivos electrónicos. Pero otra fracción grande se concentra en un tipo enteramente distinto de investigación fundamental: investigación en los fenómenos que son demasiado complejos como para ser analizados directamente bajo la simple aplicación de las leyes fundamentales. He worked at the Naval Research Laboratory (1943-45), then worked at Bell Labs from 1949 until his retirement in 1984. In addition, he also worked as a part-time visiting professor in Cambridge, England, and from 1975 held a professorship at Princeton. He carried out research into quantum theory, especially theoretical physics, of solid, magnetism, superconductivity, and superfluidity. He shared the 1977 Nobel Prize with van Vleck and Neville Mott for their fundamental theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems, work related to the properties of semiconductors.

In a review in The New York Times of Bob Woodward's latest book about American politics, I found the following: "Mr Woodward's victims know they are faced with a choice...either they can refuse to cooperate, in which case they will be described...as they were described by their enemies...or they can cave in and tell Mr Woodward their version...Either way...they know that they are at his mercy because...the book is expected to be a bestseller before it is written." John Horgan's book represents the arrival of such political reporting styles on the serious scientific scene - with the difference that we interviewees did not realise we were at his mercy until too late, having been pampered by respectful reporters lacking an agenda or platform of their own, hence obligingly furthering ours. Much of the fury this book has aroused in the scientific community is caused by the resulting sudden irruption of our sometimes imperfect personalities, our mannerisms, our casual backbiting, our unguarded boasts, and the like, into the public eye. Insofar as the scientists have eagerly angled for public notice, and in many cases for our own bestseller status, one might feel we have reaped a whirlwind of our own sowing; nonetheless where our remarks are shoehorned into favouring Horgan's personal agenda, we have a legitimate complaint.
