News Service: 107/99 AI INDEX: EUR 44/37/99 3 June 1999 Turkey Akin Birdal adopted as prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International Amnesty International has adopted Akin Birdal, President of the Turkish Human Rights Association (HRA), as prisoner of conscience, strongly condemning his imprisonment today. “Human rights defenders should never be prosecuted in connection with their legitimate activities and for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression,” Amnesty International stressed. “We are adopting Akÿn Birdal now as a prisoner of conscience and will campaign for his immediate and unconditional release.” Pierre Sané, Amnesty International’s Secretary General, has personally written to Mr Birdal to express his support: "Our organization is outraged that just one year after you barely survived a callous attempt on your life the Turkish authorities are enforcing a verdict which is clearly in violation of Article 10 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, without regard to your continued need for rehabilitative treatment usually not available in prison," Mr Sané said. As you are aware Amnesty International's concern about human rights protection in Zimbabwe has been a longstanding one. Since the establishment of our organisation in 1961 we have been supporting the national struggle for human rights in Zimbabwe through our research, relief work, publicity and campaigning. Significantly, three Amnesty relief workers were expelled by the Ian Smith regime in 1966 for their work for prisoners of conscience and their families. Mr President, you may recall that in 1978 Amnesty International had adopted more prisoners of conscience in Zimbabwe than in any other country in the world (550 cases at the beginning of that year). Today we have no adopted prisoners of conscience in Zimbabwe. However, we have a number of concerns about the current human rights situation. Our first concern is that human rights violations are being perpetrated against people solely because of their nonviolent exercise of their rights to freedom of association and assembly.

It has been abolished de jure or de facto by 106 nations, 30 countries have abolished it since 1990. However, the death penalty continues to be commonly applied in other nations. "As Rachel Corrie was an American citizen, the US government has a particular responsibility to ensure a thorough, proper and impartial investigation," said Christine Bustany, AIUSA's Advocacy Director for the Middle East.
