Amnesty International appeals against death sentences of three political prisoners
From Amnesty International. 11 December, 1996
President Levon Ter-Petrosyan of Armenia should immediately commute the death sentences of Arsen Artsruni, Armen Grigorian and Armenak Mjnoyan three political prisoners who were sentenced to death yesterday amid continuing allegations that their year-long trial was unfair, Amnesty International said today. "The President has stated that he is personally opposed to the death penalty. We ask him to show this commitment in a more concrete way by not only refusing to sign execution warrants but also actually commuting all pending death sentences," the human rights organization said. Amnesty International is calling for a thorough and impartial judicial review of the case.

Amnesty International urges KLA Leader to stop human rights abuses

Amnesty International today called on Hashim Thaçi, former political representative of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), to take a strong and visible stand against all killings, abductions, ill-treatment, house burnings and attempts at expulsion committed against members of ethnic minorities in Kosovo.
In its letter, the human rights organization is urging Mr Thaçi, one of the most prominent ethnic Albanian political figures, to use his position of moral authority and influence among the Albanians of Kosovo, to:
- bring to an end human rights abuses against ethnic Serbs, Roma or members of other minority groups;
- ensure that all individuals and organizations cooperate with KFOR, the police and the judicial system being set up under United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) supervision, to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.

El Salvador: 'A blindness of conscience'
"To threaten those who are part of civil organizations in society and human rights activists, who care about the problems of those in most need for justice in this country, shows nothing but a blindness of conscience, which does not allow them to see how much we need in this country the respect for human rights, as a foundation for the rule of law and peace." Oficina de Tutela Legal del Arzobispado, 28 June 1996 A fierce civil war raged in El Salvador during the 1980s and early 1990s between government forces and the armed opposition Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). People from all sectors of society suspected of opposing the government became victims of human rights violations, including arbitrary arrest, torture, "disappearance" and extrajudicial executions. Human rights defenders paid a high price for their legitimate activities exposing government abuse during the war. Moreover, those responsible for these violations have not been punished for their hideous crimes. The killing of Archbishop Romero was investigated by the Commission on the Truth for El Salvador (Truth Commission), established under the 1992 Peace Agreements between the Government of El Salvador and the FMLN. In its 1993 report the Commission concluded that:
