Urgent Action Stops Torture
Iraq: Call for independent investigations into war crimes of torture
Take action
"I feel my release was due to international pressure. Without your support on my behalf I think I would not be here today" –
Urgent Actions helped protect Tibetan tourist guide Gendun Rinchen from torture in May 1993, and contributed to his surprise release eight months later.
When you are afraid that someone is at risk of torture, you need to do two things. You need to act fast, and you need to shout loud.
If you are a member of the Stop Torture campaign, you already know this. You may even already have helped to save a life through taking action online. But did you also know that over the last 30 years, Amnesty International supporters have saved countless others from torture, "disappearance", execution or other serious human rights violations through taking part in the Urgent Action network?
Fighting torture with Urgent Action
Amnesty International hears that a man, woman or child has been picked up by police and may be at risk of torture. Within hours they can mobilize a network of 75,000 people in over 70 countries to send urgent faxes, letters and e-mails to the authorities responsible, all saying the same thing: stop torture, respect human rights.

Stop violence against women
Violence against women is the greatest human rights scandal of our times. From birth to death, in times of peace as well as war, women face discrimination and violence at the hands of the state, the community and the family. Control Arms
The Death Penalty

The death penalty is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment. It violates the right to life. It is irrevocable and can be inflicted on the innocent and has never been shown to deter crime more effectively than other punishments. Stop Torture
As torture persists in our world and takes on new forms and enters into ever-widening and complex contexts, AI continues its campaign for the eradication of this 21st century crime against humanity.

Turkey: ‘Scandal’ of half of all women suffering violence condemned in new report
Guldunya Toren, victim of family violence The Turkish authorities are failing to prevent 'scandalous' levels of violence against women, said Amnesty International, as it released a new report detailing the extent of violence in the family - thought to be affecting up to a half of all women in the country. The report, 'Turkey: Women Confronting Family Violence' , reveals the extent to which women in Turkey are beaten, raped, and even killed or forced to commit suicide. More information ...
Annual Report 2004: War on Global Values – Human Rights Under Attack by Armed Groups and Governments
Annual Report 2004 Governments and armed groups have launched a war on global values, destroying the human rights of ordinary people, Amnesty International said as it released its annual assessment of human rights worldwide. The 'war on terror' and the war in Iraq has not only led to a new wave of human rights abuses but also diverted attention from old ones which continue hidden from the eyes of the world.

Parliamentary and presidential elections held in 2000 and 2002 respectively, as well as more recent local council elections and parliamentary by-elections, were marred by politically motivated violence, intimidation and attacks, largely on the political opposition. The government initiated a controversial land reform program that sparked illegal occupations of commercial farms by so-called war veterans and other illegal settlers, and resulted in, among other things, the forced eviction of hundreds of thousands of farm workers, farmers and their families. Reported political manipulation of food aid includes ZANU-PF officials in charge of distribution in many rural areas withholding relief from those believed to be supporters of the MDC, and ZANU-PF affiliated youth militia targeting MDC supporters seeking relief for assaults and intimidation to prevent them from getting food.

Extract from the AI annual report.
http://www.amnesty.org/ailib/aireport/ar99/afr46.htm
AI REPORT 1999:
ZIMBABWE A gay rights activist was arrested because of his human rights work. The security forces ill-treated citizens, killing at least 10 people during and after demonstrations and rioting. Two prisoners were executed and more than five were sentenced to death. Police assaulted at least 50 refugees. In January there were demonstrations and riots over food price rises, and civic society groups launched a forum to discuss constitutional reform. In March trade unions organized a nationwide strike against tax and price rises for staple foods. The authorities declared the action illegal, threatened reprisals and ordered state-run news media not to report on union activities. There were further strikes in November. A temporary ban was decreed in November to prevent trade unions and employees' organizations from inciting or participating in mass strikes against government policies. By the end of the year, human rights organizations and trade unions had challenged the constitutionality of the ban in court. Student demonstrations against corruption and for greater state assistance began in March and led to clashes on and off campus. The University of Zimbabwe and Harare Polytechnic were closed indefinitely in June. Student protests continued nationwide in July and August.

WEET WAT ER SPEELT
Documentaire filmmaker aangevallen in Israël

Highlights of Amnesty International Report 1999
Covering events from January to December 1998
In 1998, the year of the 50 th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, armed conflicts, social and political unrest continued unabated leading to further appalling human rights abuses in Africa. Those responsible for these abuses were rarely brought to justice. On the positive aspect, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda ICTR ) announced its first judgments in the cases of people accused of involvement in the 1994 genocide. In Nigeria , the new authorities released more than 140 political prisoners. In October, a law forbidding female genital mutilation was passed by the National Assembly of Togo Mali stated that he was opposed to the death penalty. That statement was echoed in December, by president Muluzi of Malawi who reaffirmed his promise made to Amnesty International that he "will never sign the death sentence for a fellow human being". Zambia and South Africa acceded to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. In June, Ethiopia acceded to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights.
