THE VIABILITY OF CATASTROPHISM
Testing A Theory
Bryan Goff, Central Connecticut State University
The origin of the dinosaur extinction that occurred 65 million years ago has long been a topic of interest. Many scientists believe that a massive asteroid, large enough to leave a crater over 300km in diameter, was the cause while others believe that the gradual shifting of the continents and mammalian competition are to blame. Much evidence supporting both theories has been presented but the acceptance of a "super" meteor wiping a selected species from the face of the earth is a leap of faith at best. In June of 1980 Luis W. Alvarez and his colleagues introduced a theory for the cause of the extinction that occurred between the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods. Alvarez proposed that an asteroid estimated at over 100km in width struck the earth off the coast of the modern day Yucatan peninsula. The impact sent up a plume of dust and debris large enough to block out the sun for years resulting in cold dark conditions that ultimately drove the dinosaurs to extinction (Alvarez 1980). Alvarez' original hypothesis has since been expanded to include everything from massive wildfires to global volcanic activity but most subscribers to this theory, otherwise known as catastrophists, agree that some sort of wintry darkness was the cause for the ultimate demise of the dinosaurs. An unusually high level of iridium appears at this time in the geologic record and is typically the biggest piece of evidence used in support of this theory.

Shootout At The K/T Boundary
By Bruce Fellman Date: October 03, 1988 Several years ago, paleontologist Dewey M. McLean stepped to the podium at a conference on the climatological effects of volcanoes. The silver-haired professor from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute looked out over the packed house like a pastor surveying his flock. He was about to deliver a sermon— well, a paper actually—that would take on one of the exalted among his priesthood—the redoubtable Nobel laureate Luis W. Alvarez. Specifically, McLean was about to challenge Alvarez’s well-publicized theory that an asteroid had caused the extinction of the dinosaurs and thousands of other species 65 million years ago. The real angel of death, he would argue, was a “greenhouse effect” caused by intense volcanic activity. The audience of scientists was looking forward to the talk; most of them were fellow heretics. But before McLean could begin, something started roaring outside the auditorium. The noise grew quickly, and as it reached near-deafening dimensions, McLean looked heavenward smiled, and said to the assembled multitude, “Here it comes.” Everyone laughed. It was only a torrential downpour. Even Alvarez, for all his supposed power, couldn’t order an asteroid to conveniently squash opposition to his controversial theory. Still, there was a touch of nervousness to the audience’s laughter. At the time, there were dark rumors circulating that Alvarez would stop at nothing to stifle dissent. Even now, a number of vocal critics of the asteroid-impact theory are firmly convinced that the late Nobel laureate was pulling strings behind the scenes—and that the price of hewing to what they perceive as the scientific truth was loss of access to news coverage, grant money, the leading journals, and even tenure.

  • .HAPPY is he who penetrates the MYSTERY and takes his place in the world of the illuminated ones.
  • .HAPPINESS consists of two kinds: PHYSICAL and SPIRITUAL. The physical happiness is limited; its utmost duration is one day, one month, one year. It hath no result. Spiritual happiness appeareth in one's SOUL with the LOVE of GOD and suffereth one to attain to the virtues and perfections of the world of humanity. Therefore, ENDEAVOUR as much as thou art able in order to illumine the lamp of thy heart by the light of love.
    Abelard, Peter Abelard, Peter
Often the hearts of men and women are stirred, as likewise they are soothed in their SORROWS more by example than by words. And therefore, because I too have known some CONSOLATION from speech I had with one who was a witness thereof, am I mow minded to write of the SUFFERINGS which have sprung out of my MISFORTUNES, for the eyes of one who, though absent, is of himself ever a CONSOLER. This I do so that, in comparing your sorrows with mine, you may discover that yours are in truth nought, or at the most but of small account, ? amount, and so shall you come to bear them more easily.
    Abelson, P.H.
