The new particles are normally produced with the help of the great, new accelerators which cause the particles to move at very great speed. This has the advantage that, although the life-span of the particle might be as little as a ten-thousandth part of a millionth of a second the track acquires a length of several centimetres.
Luis Alvarez with Bubble Chamber display built in Berkeley, California. One could, however, suspect the existence of particles with considerably shorter life-spans and with such small track-lengths that they are impossible to measure. In this case one is obliged, instead, to study the tracks of their disintegration products and the tracks of the reactions they produce in collision with other particles. The pattern of tracks thus becomes very complicated; the correct interpretation of what actually occurs requires acute powers of discernment and a particularly advanced experimental technique. It is in this field that Professor Luis Alvarez has made the contributions for which he is today being rewarded.

Dictionary Definition of Luis W. Alvarez

Luis Walter Alvarez ) of San Francisco, California was a famed physicist who worked at the University of California, Berkeley Alvarez won the Nobel Prize in Physics for "the discovery of a large number of resonance states, made possible through his development of the technique of using hydrogen bubble chamber and data analysis." Specifically, his research made it possible to record and study the short lived particles created in particle accelerators Alvarez and his student Lawrence Johnston designed the detonators for the spherical implosives used on the Trinity and Nagasaki bombs With geologist son Walter , Luis proposed the asteroid-impact theory to explain the iridium anomaly of the K-T extinction boundary . An impact by an extraterrestrial body is now widely accepted as causing the extinction that killed the dinosaurs. Alvarez also proposed a jet-recoil theory to explain why Kennedy 's head jerked the wrong way if Oswald

Luis W. Alvarez, Physics: Berkeley
Professor Emeritus
Luis Walter Alvarez, physicist, inventor, engineer, entrepreneur, and teacher died in his home in Berkeley on 1 September 1988 after a long illness. The importance and variety of his experimental discoveries and technical contributions are perhaps unmatched by any other 20th-century physicist. He attained the highest public recognition in several areas: In science, he received the 1968 Nobel Prize in Physics for the development and use of the liquid hydrogen bubble chamber to discover a number of short-lived resonance particles whose classification led to the quark description of matter. In aviation, he received the 1946 Collier Air Trophy for his radar-based blind landing system, which he first employed during the Battle of Britain. As inventor, in 1978 he was inducted into the Inventors' Hall of Fame for his clever physics instruments, brilliant aviation radar systems, and ingenious optical devices. Luie, as he was known to all, will probably be best remembered by the public for ingenious experiments that applied physics to other sciences. He X-rayed Chephren's pyramid in Egypt using cosmic radiation, only to find that there were no undiscovered chambers inside. His application of elementary physics to the Kennedy assassination evidence verified the Warren Commission finding that only a single assassin was involved. But perhaps his most dramatic discovery was made after his "retirement." Doing again what he probably did better than any other 20th-century scientist, he jumped into a totally new field, paleontology and geology, and answered a central, long-standing question. With his collaborators, he analyzed a 65 million-year-old clay layer, and showed that the great ecological catastrophe that killed the dinosaurs was caused by the impact of an asteroid or comet.

H O F E S T Global, Universal System - World Level Luis W. Alvarez , USA. Presented October 7, 1986 at the 1986 International Congress on Technology and Technology Exchange, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Dr. Luis W. Alvarez is professor of physics, emeritus, at the Radiation Laboratory of the University of California at Berkeley, where he has worked since 1936. He is also senior research physicist at Lawrence Berkley Laboratory in California. He was born in San Francisco, California on June 13, 1911. He attended the University of Chicago from 1928 to 1936, where he received his undergraduate and graduate degrees. Alvarez joined the Radiation Laboratory of the University of California in 1936. From 1940 to 1943, he was on leave at the Radiation Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Then he worked at the Metallurgical Laboratory of the University of Chicago from 1943 to 1944, and at the Los Alamos Laboratory of the Manhattan District from 1944 to 1945. Early in his scientific career, Dr. Alvarez worked concurrently in the fields of optics and cosmic rays. He is credited with many discoveries including: codiscoverer of East-West effect in cosmic rays; radioactivity of tritium a source of thermonuclear energy; helium 3, K-electron capture by nuclei, measured neutron magnetic moment; radar systems (blind landing system); nuon catalysis of nuclear fission; proton linear accelerator; strange baryon and meson resonant states; neutron time of flight spectrometer; charge exchange accelerator; hydrogen bubble chambers; bubble chamber film measuring systems; variable focus thin lens; and stabilizing image in handheld cameras and viewing devices.

Letter to Luis Alvarez
June 1, 1988
Dr. Luis W. Alvarez
Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory
University of California
Berkeley, VA 94720
Dear Dr. Alvarez:
I read your comments in Malcolm Browne's New York Times article. Now that passage of time permits reflective contemplation, I respond.
For your reference to my promotion: After one of my VPI colleagues had attended a meeting with you on the Stanford campus in 1982, he informed our department head and Executive Committee on comments you had made about me. In conjunction with recommendations from some "prominent" highly political paleontologists that my K-T work was "not going anywhere," and that I had spent my career puttering in a "little square mile," the department head became distressed with me. I found out about these activities when he informed me that, because my "work was not going anywhere," I could "never be promoted at VPI," that I had "no future here," and should "look elsewhere."
That situation devastated me. By my own originality, I was a principal in a great scientific debate with one of the world's most creative living geniuses, himself working in an environment predicated upon creativity, and I had been undermined, and nearly destroyed, in my own! The stresses over the damage to my career here at VPI did its work. Throughout 1984, nearly every joint in my body was so inflamed, and swollen, that any movement was excruciating; medication kept me nauseated. Finally, by the grace of some objective and fair-minded scientists who informed the head that my work was original, and forefront, I was promoted.
