It is without doubt a symbol of international recognition of our Soviet and Russian physics Zhores Alferov Dr Alferov, who is also a member of parliament, is calling on his colleagues in the State Duma to provide money for the scientific community to build on his success. Dr Alferov is the first Russian to win any Nobel prize in the post-Soviet era. He and two American scientists, Herbert Kroemer and Jack Kilby, are sharing the almost $1m prize money. Soviet research When news of the award came through on Tuesday, Dr Alferov was quick to point out that it was as much for the Ioffe Physico-Technical Institute which he heads in St Petersburg, as for him personally. Are there any results or hopes here? Alferov: Generally speaking, the Sun is an inexhaustible source of energy. It is our thermonuclear reactor. And our task is to build an effective conversion station. The existing converters of solar energy based on semiconductor photocells are effective enough. And the main problem is efficiency, which would make it possible to use them more. Though, there are whole numbers of fields in which the converters can widely be used. Mobile telephone communication requires self-operating stations for feeding the antennas. In our huge country this would mean a mass production of solar batteries. The main problem is that the results of our work are wanted abroad, not here. What we have to do is to use natural resources to rebuild the industry and first of all its science-oriented branches. RA: What is needed to cut the way from a scientific discovery to its implementation in practice?
