Zhores I. Alferov In 1973 Zh. I. Alferov took over the chair of optoelectronics at the St Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (former V. I. Ulyanov (Lenin) Electrotechnical Institute) and in 1988 he was appointed to Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Technology at the St Petersburg Technical University. He was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1972 and Academy's full member in 1979. From 1989 onward, he has been Vice-President of the USSR (Russian) Academy of Sciences and President of its St Petersburg Scientific Center. For his research Professor Zh. I. Alferov was awarded a number of national and international prizes:

Nositel Nobelovy ceny za fyziku pro rok 2000, která mu byla udìlena za vývoj polovodièových struktur používaných ve vysokorychlostní a opto-elektronice.
Narozen 15.3.1930 ve mìstì Vitebsk v Bìlorusku. V roce 1970 získal doktorát z fyziky a matematiky na A. F. Ioffeho fyzikálnì-technickém institutu v Leningradì (dnes Petrohrad). Dodnes pracuje na tomto institutu a je možné ho kontaktovat na adrese: Zhores.Alferov@pop.ioffe.rssi.ru.
V roce 1952 promoval na fakultì elektroniky na institutu V. I. Uljanova (Lenin). Od roku 1953 se stal jejím zamìstnancem. Postupnì vystøídal tato místa: mladý výzkumník (1953–1964), výzkumník senior (1964–1967), vedoucí laboratoøe (1967–1987), øeditel (1987–až do souèasnosti). V roce 1961 získal titul CSc. za pøínos do polovodièové technologie a v roce 1970 titul DrSc. za fyziku a matematiku. Oba tituly udìlil Ioffeho Institut v Leningradì.
Od roku 1962 se zabýval heterogenními polovodièi na bázi III-V. Jeho pøínos spoèívá v objasnìní a popsání vlastností a chování dopovaných polovodièù, dále se zabýval vývojem laserù, solárních èlánkù, nanášením vrstev, LED diodami a jinými, v moderní elektronice použitelnými, heterostrukturami.
V roce 1972 byl zvolen èlenem korespondentem Ruské akademie vìd (døíve sovìtské). V roce 1979 se stal jejím èlenem. Od roku 1989 byl vice-presidentem ruské akademie vìd a presidentem vìdeckého centra v Petrohradì.

Full Member of the Russian Academy of Science. Vice-President of the Russian Academy of Science. Chairman of the Presidium of the St.Petersburg Scientific Centre of the Russian Academy of Science. Director of the Ioffe Physics and Technics Institute. Born March 15,1930 in Vitebsk. In 1952 graduated in Vacuum Technology from the Leningrad Ulyanov (Lenin) Electrotechnical Institute. Worked at the Ioffe Physics and Technics Institute as an engineer, as a researcher, as a head of a department. Since 1987 has been the Director of the Institute. Chief Editor of the "Physics and Engineering of Semi-conductors" magazine. In 1961 defended his dissertation on the research of bull germanic and silicon rectifiens. By the results of helerojunctions in semiconductors defended his doctoral dissertation and became Doctor of Physics and Mathematics. In 1972 became Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Science. Outstanding Russian scientist.
