Background:

Hull House was founded in 1889 by Jane Addams, along with her friend Ellen Starr. Jane had a very compassionate heart from the time she was a young girl. Everywhere she went, Jane had a desire to help people less fortunate than herself. Jane's father helped shape her to become more charitable to others less fortunate. Even as a young girl Jane wanted to know why all people didn't live in nice homes with yards like her own. One day she saw a part of town that was run down and she could hardly believe that people could live in such "horrid little houses" (Blackstock, p.8). That day Jane decided that she wanted to live in a large house in the middle of an awful place like she had seen. Jane wanted to do this so she could make a difference in the lives of people who lived there.
Jane Addams was born on September 6, 1860, in Cedarville, Illinois. One year later the War between the North and the South started. That same year the telegraph lines reached coast to coast. While Jane was a young girl, President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated.
Jane had the opportunity to go to Rockford Female Seminary at the age of seventeen. It was there at Rockford that Jane decided she wanted to be a missionary in the United States to help the poor. Jane went to Rockford for four years and was an excellent student. She received the highest grades out of every member in her class. Jane enjoyed having fun but was also of a serious nature.

PREFACTORY NOTE
These studies in the gradual development of the moral substitutes for war have been made in the industrial quarter of a cosmopolitan city where the morality exhibits marked social and international aspects. Parts of two chapters have been published before in the form of addresses, and two others as articles in the North American Review and in the American Journal of Sociology. All of them however are held together by a conviction that has been maturing through many years. Hull-House,
Chicago. (viii) [BLANK] (ix) CONTENTS CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION
  • Newer ideals of peace are dynamic; if made operative will do away with war as a natural process Of the older ideals the appeal to pity is dogmatic . The appeal to the sense of prudence also dogmatic and at this moment seems impotent Outlook for universal peace by international arbitration Primitive and profound impulses operate against impulse to war . . . . . . .

    Addams, Jane (1860-1935)
page: American reformer, social worker, founder of the Hull House Settlement in Chicago, and peace activist, Jane Addams received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. Her involvement in same-sex relationships has consistently been hidden or minimized by official biographers. As a cultural feminist, Addams argued that the dominant male values at the turn of the twentieth century contributed to such tragic circumstances as poverty, urban blight, and war. It was therefore, she believed, the duty of women, with their superior social and emotional awareness, to propose alternative models of living. Sponsor Message.
Addams's vision of a humane, communitarian society in which justice, freedom, mutual support, and individual achievement are the preeminent values is her enduring legacy. Addams was born into a well-off and locally influential family in Cedarville, Illinois, on September 6, 1860. Her mother died when she was only two years old, and she suffered from tuberculosis of the spine. When she was eight, her father married a cultured but domineering woman who would attempt to instill traditional values into her independent-minded stepdaughter.
