  • Euclid, Elements In Greek, Ninth century Euclid's "Elements," written about 300 B.C., a comprehensive treatise on geometry, proportions, and the theory of numbers, is the most long-lived of all mathematical works. This manuscript preserves an early version of the text. Shown here is Book I Proposition 47, the Pythagorean Theorem: the square on the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares on the sides.   • Archimedes, Works In Latin, Translated by Jacobus Cremonensis, ca. 1458 In the early 1450's, Pope Nicholas V commissioned Jacobus de Sancto Cassiano Cremonensis to make a new translation of Archimedes with the commentaries of Eutocius. This became the standard version and was finally printed in 1544. This early and very elegant manuscript may have been in the possession of Piero della Francesca before coming to the library of the Duke of Urbino. The first pure mathematician and an important figure in the development of mathematics
Pythagoras was born on the island of Samos in 568 BC to a Phoenician merchant from Tyre called Mnesarchus . His mother, Pythais was a native of Samos. He is often described as the first pure mathematician. He is an extremely important figure in the development of mathematics yet we know relatively little about his mathematical achievements. Unlike many later mathematicians, where at least we have some of the books which they wrote, we have nothing of Pythagoras's writings. The society which he led, half religious and half scientific, followed a code of secrecy which certainly means that today Pythagoras is a mysterious figure. We do have details of Pythagoras's life from early biographies which use important original sources yet are written by authors who attribute divine powers to him, and whose aim was to present him as a god-like figure. What we present below is an attempt to collect together the most reliable sources to reconstruct an account of Pythagoras's life. There is fairly good agreement on the main events of his life but most of the dates are disputed with different scholars giving dates which differ by 20 years. Some historians treat all this information as merely legends but, even if the reader treats it in this way, being such an early record it is of historical importance.

Ancient Greek Mathematics
Have you ever wondered who was responsible for making those complicated theorems that we use in geometry and algebra? What about the fact that certain intersecting lines are called rectangles or triangles? Where did all of these interesting ideas come from?
Most of these ideas came from the great minds of mathematicians from ancient Greece. If it wasn't for these Mathematicians, we would have a harder time solving mathematical problems. For example, modern architects would have a harder time calculating distances as they would not know that the sum of the squares of two sides of a right triangle equals the square of its hypotenuse (Pythagorean Theorem). These ideas have formed the basis for the advancement of science in western civilization.
The mathematics and astronomy of the Greeks had been known in medieval western Europe only through often imperfect translations, some of them made from Arabic intermediary texts rather than the Greek originals. For over a thousand years (from the fifth century B.C. to the fifth century A.D.) Greek mathematicians maintained a splendid tradition of work in the exact sciences: mathematics, astronomy, and related fields. Though the early synthesis of Euclid and some of the supremely brilliant works of Archimedes were known in the medieval west, this tradition really survived elsewhere. In Byzantium, the capital of the Greek-speaking Eastern empire, the original Greek texts were copied and preserved. In the Islamic world, in locales that ranged from Spain to Persia, the texts were studied in Arabic translations and fundamental new work was done.

Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity Apollonius of Perga ( c262-c190 BC ) - whose life story remains a mystery as it is not even certain he was born in Perga, and his life dates are rough estimates - is remembered for his only major work still extant, Conics , an 8-book work (of which the first 7 survive) which summarises the knowledge of the time on the subject, and goes on to introduce numerous major new ideas. The terms "ellipse", "parabola" and "hyperbola" to describe conical sections, were coined in this work, and new definitions of the shapes were found. Until then, they had been defined as sections, perpendicular to the base, of different types of cone. Apollonius redefined them all as sections, at different angles, of the same cone. He credited Conon of Samos ( c280-c220 BC ), a collaborator of Archimedes of Syracuse ( c287-212 BC ), and Euclid of Alexandria ( c325-c265 BC ) with the original work on conical sections that inspired this work.     by Ron Kurtus (6 September 2001) Archimedes (287- 212 BC) was a great ancient Greek mathematician, devising ways to calculate areas and volumes, defining pi, and formulating integral calculus. But it was his inventions, such as a water pump, and discoveries such as hydrostatics, that made him famous in his time. Some of his inventions are still used today. He was killed when the Romans overran his city. Questions you may have about this are:

    Early years
    Archimedes was born in Syracuse, Sicily in about 287 BC. Although Sicily is near Italy, Syracuse was considered Greek city at the time. His father was an astronomer, who had occasional dealings with the Syracuse king.
