    A Word About Laurent Lafforgue
He entered the CNRS as a research fellow in 1990, joining the research team of Arithmétique et Géométrie Algébrique in the Mathematics Department of the University Paris-Sud, Orsay. In 1994 he presented his thesis "D-Chtoukas de Drinfeld", under the guidance of Gérard Laumon, also from the CNRS. His thesis received recognition with the 1996 Cours Peccot and the Prize Peccot awards, awarded by the Collège of France. In 1998 he was invited speaker at the International Congress ofMathematicians in Berlin. Laurent Lafforgue established the Langlands Correspondences for a much wider class of cases than previously known. These correspondences connect arithmetic properties to analytic properties of some special group representations called automorphic representations. It was formulated by Robert Langlands at the end of the 1960's. In rank 1, this conjecture is nothing other than the now traditional "class field theory" of Emil Artin. In rank 2 and for number fields, the first great confirmations of this conjecture were the proof of the conjecture of Ramanujan per Pierre Deligne and the proof by Langlands itself of the conjecture of Artin except for a case. At the beginning of the seventies, Vladimir Drinfeld attacked the conjectures in a more general algebraic context. For that purpose, he built varieties similar to modular curves and showed certain cases of the conjecture of Langlands in rank 2. Then, as these varieties did not make it possible to reach all desired representations, Drinfeld introduced the "chtoucas", a step which enabled him to prove the conjecture of Langlands in rank 2. This turned out to make the general case accessible, after formidable technical difficulties were surmounted.

The comparison is not very accurate, in particular because the age limit is applied strictly. Fields Medals are awarded for a body of work, rather than for a particular result, though there is clearly consensus that some individual theorems can and should be recognised in this way. (That is not to say that some awards from the past haven't been in some ways contentious or controversial - they have.) Since the institution of the

A faculty member since 1993, Borcherds received the medal for his work in the fields of algebra and geometry, in particular for his proof of the so-called "Monstrous Moonshine" conjecture. He joins two previous Fields Medalists at Berkeley, Steven Smale and Vaughan Jones. The medal, the highest scientific award for mathematicians, is awarded every four years at the International Congress of Mathematicians to a mathematician no older than 40. The medal and a prize of 15,000 Canadian dollars were presented at the opening ceremony of the congress in Berlin to Borcherds and to mathematicians Maxim Kontsevich, William Timothy Gowers and Curtis McMullen. Until recently, Kontsevich and McMullen also were on the Berkeley faculty. Kontsevich left in 1997 to become a permanent professor at the Institut des Hautes Etudes in Paris. McMullen resigned in July to accept a position at Harvard University.

    Statement by Dr. Rita Colwell
    Director, National Science Foundation
On The Recipients of the Fields Medal and Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in Mathematics
I am pleased to congratulate Vladimir Voevodsky and Madhu Sudan on receiving the most distinguished prizes in the mathematical sciences. Their accomplishments reflect the recognition that mathematics underlies all fields of science and engineering, enabling progress in our economy, our industry and our lives. We are proud that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has supported the groundbreaking work of these honorees. The Fields Medal, the world's highest honor for mathematical research, rivals the Nobels of other sciences. Vladimir Voevodsky, currently at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., shares the 2002 Fields Medal with Laurent Lafforgue, a colleague in France. Dr. Voevodsky conducted his prize-winning research in algebraic geometry and number theory, developing novel ways to describe the geometric shapes of solutions to algebraic equations, with support from NSF grants. Madhu Sudan, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, is receiving the 2002 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, which recognizes outstanding work in the mathematical aspects of computer science. His work in advancing the theory of probabilistically checkable proofsa way to recast a mathematical proof in computer language for additional checks on its validityand developing error-correcting codes was accomplished with the support of an NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award and individual grants.

The Fields Medal is the most prestigious award for mathematicians and has been awarded every four years since 1936 at the International Mathematical Congress to at least two young mathematicians for their outstanding achievements. The prize is endowed with 15,000 Canadian dollars and was conceived by the Canadian mathematician John Charges Fields (1863-1932) to compensate for the lack of a Nobel Prize in Mathematics.
Gerd Faltings, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in Bonn, is only the second German to have won the prize so far.
