Mathematical Aspects of Quantum Chaos II
Quantum Chaos on Hyperbolic Manifolds
Organisers: Jens Bolte, Jonathan Harrison, Frank Steiner
Topics
The geodesic motion on a compact manifold with hyperbolic metric (constant negative curvatures) is a prime example of a chaotic system. It is ergodic, mixing, and has the K and Anosov properties. The corresponding quantum dynamics are determined by the hyperbolic Laplacian on the manifold. Both aspects are intimately linked through the Selberg trace formula. These systems are among the first examples in the field of quantum chaos and have been studied in great detail. Their classical and quantum descriptions employ methods from dynamical systems, ergodic theory, hyperbolic geometry, number theory, spectral theory, microlocal analysis and other areas of mathematics. Large scale numerical calculations have been performed leading to new insight as well as to precise tests of various conjectures. Of particular interest are spectral correlations and the semiclassical behaviour of Laplace-eigenfunctions. This school is intended for graduate students, postdocs and young researchers. Basic lectures will provide the concepts underlying past and recent developments in the field while more advanced lectures introduce areas currently under active study. The lectures will be given by both mathematicians and theoretical physicists, reflecting the close interaction between these disciplines.

IMSI is an international consortium of research institutes in the mathematical sciences that run thematic research programs and have large visitor programs. IMSI meetings are normally held in conjunction with major international meetings and provide a forum for developing cooperation among the member institutions. IMSI meetings have been held at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Zurich (1994), ICIAM meeting in Hamburg (1995) and ICM in Berlin (1998). Recent IMSI gatherings were scheduled at the meeting of the European Mathematical Society in Barcelona 2000 and the ICM in Beijing in 2002 . The next IMSI meeting will be at the ICM in Madrid in 2006

Page created by Maggie Leharne Last Modified: 09/03 The Internet is a rich source of information but you must be aware of the variable quality of the information that is available. A good starting point when searching for resources on the Internet to support your academic work is to use one of the Internet Subject Gateways - especially one of those provided specifically for staff and students in higher education - rather than a general Internet search engine. The reason is that these gateways provide access to good quality Internet sites and resources which have often been reviewed by information and subject specialists; particularly recommended is the EEVL Subject Gateway . You will be able to use the Internet to get information from journal articles, bibliographic databases and library catalogues; find resource materials such as software as well as contact people and organisations. If you are not familiar with searching the Internet the EEVL Subject Gateway includes a link to the RDN Virtual Training Suite This is a set of online tutorials designed to help users improve their Internet literacy as well as teaching Internet information skills, especially how to critically evaluate Internet resources before using them to support academic work. Click on the web tutorials link in the toolbar and then select the subject tutorial you want to follow.

CONFERENCE ON
COMPUTATIONAL AND MATHEMATICAL METHODS
IN MUSIC
Vienna, December 1-4, 1999
Second announcement, call for papers and posters, version of July 1999
The aim of this conference is to bring together mathematicians interested in or working on subjects of relevance to music, and musicians who make use of computational methods. As a contribution to the EMS-series Diderot Forum by the European Mathematical Society, the primary aim of the conference is to raise public awareness of the role of mathematics in our society, in particular by showing the multiple connections and mutual influences which exist between music and mathematics - both unique cultural goods. In contrast to the parallel events in Lisbon (historical aspects) and Paris (formal and logical aspects, programming and mathematical structures), the conference in Vienna will put emphasis on computational and mathematical aspects of music synthesis, analysis, restoration and related topics.
The workshop covers the following topics:
  • synthesis of musical sounds analysis of musical sounds (transcription digital data - MIDI, time-frequency methods, quantitative analysis of instruments and musical interpretation)
