Nowadays there are powerful computer algebra systems, like Magma, GAP, Macaulay2, Axiom, to name a few, which are specially designed for handling large and complicated objects in such abstract fields as group theory, geometry, and algebraic geometry. All the above mentioned approaches have been used in applications of mathematics. Formula manipulation software (eg, Maple and Matlab) can compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors of complicated matrices with symbolic entries.

Introduction The increasing development of electronic devices for the publication of papers and books in mathematics lead to a drastic change in the communication facilities between authors and editors, to new ways of distributing mathematical publications to research mathematicians - like electronic journals, and to an extension of the offers of information on mathematical research to the mathematical community. Confronted with a permanently increasing number of research papers and high production and distribution costs for mathematical journals and monographs, it becomes more and more difficult to get access to these publications. Electronic publishing may provide better facilities for these purposes. It hopefully will reduce the production costs for the preparation of the articles and improve the methods to find his way through the tremendous bulk of mathematical research papers. It will enable reviewing journals to speed up and improve their procedures. Moreover, as an extension of these offers, a lot of additional items of interest for mathematicians appear in the web already like pre-prints, educational material in mathematics, software, graphical material and others. Information databases provide a qualified access to some of these offers, but for the whole set a uniform access facility with a high degree of de-duplication will be highly desirable. The result of the EULER project may provide one tool for this.

The Mathematical Problems of David Hilbert
About Hilbert's address and his 23 mathematical problems
Hilbert's address of 1900 to the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris is perhaps the most influential speech ever given to mathematicians, given by a mathematician, or given about mathematics. In it, Hilbert outlined 23 major mathematical problems to be studied in the coming century. Some are broad, such as the axiomatization of physics (problem 6) and might never be considered completed. Others, such as problem 3, were much more specific and solved quickly. Some were resolved contrary to Hilbert's expectations, as the continuum hypothesis (problem 1). Hilbert's address was more than a collection of problems. It outlined his philosophy of mathematics and proposed problems important to his philosophy. Although almost a century old, Hilbert's address is still important and should be read (at least in part) by anyone interested in pursuing research in mathematics. In 1974 a symposium was held at Northern Illinois University on the Mathematical developments arising from Hilbert problems.

    Articles in many ways,

    the EMS committee of RPA:
    A competition surely may,
    inspire to the way,
    in which to pay,
    as we say,
attention to public awareness! During World Mathematical Year 2000, many articles on mathematics addressing a general audience were published throughout the world, and many valuable ideas for articles popularizing mathematics were generated. The Committee for Raising Public Awareness of Mathematics of the European Mathematical Society (acronym RPA) believes that it is vital that such articles be written. In order to inspire future articles with a mathematical theme and to collect valuable contributions, which deserve translation into many languages, the EMS wishes to encourage the submissions of articles on mathematics for a general audience, to a competition. The EMS is convinced that such articles will contribute to raising public awareness of mathematics. The RPA-committee of the EMS invites mathematicians, or others, to submit manuscripts for suitable articles on mathematics.

    Societat Catalana de Matemàtiques
The Catalan Mathematical Society, an affiliated society to the Institut d'Estudis Catalans, is the continuation of the mathematics section of the Catalan Society of Sciences, founded in 1931. Presently it has more than 1000 members, mainly from Catalonia, who are either researchers or teachers, at any level of the educational system, or who work at bussinesses, industry, administration, etc.
The Society aims at promoting mathematics and mathematicians' professional life in all aspects and in all lands where catalan language is used. The Society organizes activities of several kinds, publishes books and two journals, gives prizes, and represents the catalan mathematical community before the education authorities and other institutions at home or abroad, in close cooperation with other mathematical societies of more specific scope. The Society is a member of the European Mathematical Society and of the Spanish Committee of the International Mathematical Union, and holds reciprocity agreements with other mathematical societies of Catalonia, Spain and world-wide. Some of the courses and lectures organized by the Society are aimed at research mathematicians, while others are aimed at secondary or high school teachers or at a general mathematical audience. The Society also organizes several competitions and prizes addressed to students from secondary school to university, which gather a large number of boys and girls from all over Catalonia and Valencia.
