    The purpose of the program:
The EmNet program is aimed at creation of pan-European information environment for activities of mathematicians-explorers, based on modern computer network resources of telecooperation and perspective telecommunication technologies.
    The main directions of activities
  • Creation of pan-European system of EmNet centers, connected by adjusted high-speed channels of information exchange, based both on existing public data transfer networks and on private elements of telecommunication infrastructure.
  • Support of professionally-oriented system of scientific document preparation and exchange with remote joint work elements. ( Euromath project, GRIF ).
  • Support of professionally-oriented system of interfaces and access to the leading international data banks and automated libraries.
  • Creation of own information resources - directories of mathematicians and physical and mathematical organizations, conferences and arrangements, pre-print depositories, current edition reviews, etc. including support of the

Summary
During the 4 years of EmNet/fSU, a modern, internationally oriented research infrastructure based on computing and computer networking will be established on fSU territory. This aims, in the first place, at the mathematically oriented sciences. The plans have been prepared through international collaboration since 1988. Only now can they be realized. Considering the strength of mathematical research in all parts of Europe, the expected synergy effect will be pronounced. The declaration concerns the 15 months long first phase which is technology oriented with transfer of know-how and with limited but central implementations of services within communication, document handling, information, databases, directories, and publishing. There are 8 partners from fSU. An aggressive expansion to cover some 70-120 partners from fSU in a second phase will be planned.

Remarkable Mathematicians: From Euler to von Neumann
by Ioan James
Reviewed by Philip D. Straffin
I will say first that I think everyone who teaches mathematics at the college level should own this book. It contains 6-10 page biographical sketches of 60 of the most important mathematicians born between 1707 and 1903. The information seems to be quite reliable, the presentation is usually interesting, and there are fascinating quotes by and about the mathematicians. Careful attention is paid to interrelations between the sketches, and by reading them in sequence you get a good sense of the development of the mainstream European mathematical community from the 18th to the early 20th century. Through the inclusion of Germain, Kovalevskaya, Noether, Takagi, Ramanujan, half a dozen American and two Soviet mathematicians, you see the beginnings of the broadening of that community. Perhaps even more usefully, you can dip in quickly to find that key fact or anecdote about Jacobi or Borel for tomorrow's class, or a picture of Poncelet in uniform to enliven your transparencies. You can think if you agree with the opinion of an unnamed contemporary of Cauchy: "His harsh and rigid spirit, his lack of indulgence towards the young who follow a scientific career, make him one of the least likeable of the savants and certainly one of the least liked." You can learn about Cayley's work to allow women to study at Cambridge, or be moved by Hausdorff's dignified choice of suicide in the face of Nazi deportation. I don't know of anywhere else where this information appears in such accessible form.

The Glorious Qur'an: English Narration of its Meaning
Welcome to the web page on Muslim contribution to humanity and Islamic Civilization. This page is dedicated to those Muslims whose multi-disciplinary contributions sparked the light of learning and productivity and without whom the European Renaissance would not have begun and come to maturity. Their contributions are rarely mentioned in formal education, and if at all mentioned their names are Latinized or changed with the effect of obscuring their identity and origin, and their association with the Islamic Civilization. There are two famous mathematicians associated with Guildford,
  • Lewis Carroll alias Charles Dodgson, who wrote Alice's adventures in Wonderland. He was a mathematician at Oxford and is commemorated in Guildford by
    • His grave (in the graveyard on the Mount by the chapel)
    • a statue of Alice and a rabbit disappearing down a hole on the riverside (River Wey) at Millmead in the centre of Guildford.
    • Another metal statue of Alice going through the Looking Glass in the Castle grounds just behind Lewis Carroll's sisters' house (he bought it for his 3 sisters).
The text of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as WWW pages are worth looking at just for Tenniel's illustrations.
    Joel Birenbaum's page
on Lewis Carroll is good too.
  • Alan Turing (1912-1954) the founder of modern computing. He was brought up in Guildford and his biographer, Andrew Hodges in "Alan Turing: the Enigma" mentions that he used to walk around Guildford as a young lad discussing his ideas on computing with his mother. He lived at 22 Ennismore Avenue by Stoke Park in Guildford during his school days. There is a plaque on the house commemorating Turing's early life in Guildford. References and Links to other sites:

The Kerala School, European Mathematics and Navigation
By D.P. Agrawal
The National Geographic has declared Kerala, the south-west coast near the tip of the Indian peninsula, as God's Own Country. It has been a centre of maritime trade, with its rich variety of spices greatly in demand, even as early as the time of the Babylonians. Famous travellers and explorers such as Ibn Battuta and Vasco da Gama came from across the Arabian Sea. In recent years, Kerala has gained recognition for its role in the reconstruction of medieval Indian mathematics. Joseph (1994) has very emphatically brought out the significance of the Kerala school of Maths in his The Crest of the Peacock , though the Eurocentric scholars have severely criticized it. C.K. Raju, the well known mathematician and historian of science, has also written a good deal not only on the famous work, Yuktibhasa Tantra Samgraha , Jyesthadeva's Yuktibhasa , Putumana Somayaji's Karana Paddhati and Sankara Varman' s Sadratnamala Tantra Samgraha , he claimed that this work laid the foundation for a complete system of fluxions ['Fluxion' was the term used by Isaac Newton for the rate of change (derivative) of a continuously varying quantity, or function, which he called a 'fluent']. Best way: simply ask the person. Sometimes that is not possible. If one of the following doesn't work, try another. There are three approaches depending on what information you already have:
  • Search special lists such as the membership directory of the AMS
  • Search a "company" directory, such as Cornell University (www.cornell.edu)
  • Search a specific web site. Example: It is frequently possible to combine these, say by searching for someone else working at the same location or in the same organization. With this guess of a plausible URL you can search there. This is one of the more effective ways of locating someone in Europe where there are fewer electronic organizational directories.
