OUR ALLIES ORGANISATION PROFILES
The European Mathematical Society, EMS
I am very happy that ECMI is giving me this space to introduce our organisation. The EMS was founded in 1990. Hence, it is a rather young organisation, younger than ECMI. Being young means that most things don't yet run along well-established paths. This might be seen as a disadvantage, but it also has a positive aspect, namely lots of room for new initiative. With its 46 corporate members, international, national and regional societies, the EMS embraces Europe as a continent and all of mathematics, pure and applied. Nevertheless, you might not yet have heard a lot about the EMS because, while having a strong leg in pure mathematics, it has not been very prominent in applied mathematics. However, the EMS is aware that applied mathematics is becoming more and more important. This is why, after the first and second presidents, Friedrich Hirzebruch and Jean-Pierre Bourguignon respectively, I have been chosen as an applied mathematician. One of my main aims will be to strengthen the EMS's leg in applied mathematics. For this reason I am very happy that ECMI joined the EMS as a corporate member last year. Even before this, the ties between the EMS and ECMI were strengthened when one of ECMI's former presidents, Heinz Engl, became Chairman of the Committee for Applications of Mathematics. ECMI's current president, Vincenzo Capasso, also serves on this committee.

The Glorious Qur'an: English Narration of its Meaning
Welcome to the web page on Muslim contribution to humanity and Islamic Civilization. This page is dedicated to those Muslims whose multi-disciplinary contributions sparked the light of learning and productivity and without whom the European Renaissance would not have begun and come to maturity. Their contributions are rarely mentioned in formal education, and if at all mentioned their names are Latinized or changed with the effect of obscuring their identity and origin, and their association with the Islamic Civilization. Joint EMS mathematical weekend
September 3-5, Prague, Czech Republic
Europe has a long tradition in Mathematics. The development of Mathematics in Europe was almost always on a national, or even regional, basis. One should therefore speak of "traditions" rather than a single "tradition" in Mathematics in Europe. This was of course a reflection of the political disputes and cultural differences among the many european nationalities. However, the last two decades have witnessed major changes in these state of affairs: many of the political conflicts have disapeared and the information revolution has broken national barriers. Meanwhile, a European sense of identity is slowly growing. The European Mathematical Society (EMS) has helped bringing these changes to the European mathematical community through its various activities, including the organization of meetings and workshops, such as the European Congress of Mathematics and the EMS Summer Schools. We follow the scenario suggested by EMS on series of smaller, more frequent, meetings in specific areas of mathematics: the EMS Mathematical Weekends. They offer a chance for European and other mathematicians working in related areas to get together and interact on a more permanent basis. This is the second meeting in a newly established series, following the

Activities of the Diderot Mathematical Forums
A cycle of conferences, called Diderot Mathematical Forum features one conference every other year (formerly every year) which takes place simultaneously in three European cities exchanging information by telecommunication. Each cycle addresses three different aspects of mathematics: fundamental mathematics, the application of mathematics and the relation of both to society. Newsletter of the EMS.
Four times a year, a Newsletter is sent to all members. It contains information about the Society, announcements of conferences, book reviews, a problem corner and articles of general interest.
Newsletter No. 50 (December 2003) now online.
European Congresses of Mathematics

Every four years, the EMS organizes a European Congress. The purpose of this major event is threefold: to present various new aspects of pure and applied mathematics to a wide audience; to be a forum for discussion of the relationship between mathematics and society in Europe; to enhance cooperation among mathematicians from all European countries. EMS Prizes
The EMS prizes have been established by the EMS and are presented every four years at the European Congresses of Mathematics. Moreover, the Felix Klein prize has been established in 1999 by the EMS and the endowing organisation, the Institute for Industrial Mathematics in Kaiserslautern and is also presented every four years at the European Congresses of Mathematics.

The Databases in Mathematics
The documentation plays an important and outstanding role in the work environnement of mathematicians. It is his essential work utility. This is the reason for that the access to specialized information is decisive in mathematics. The number of research articles in mathematics, which appear each year has grown from less than 1.000 in 1870 to approximately 60.000 in 1996. This explosion of documents is due to the increase of the number of mathematicians all over the world , following the growing impact of mathematics in the different fields of sciences (physics, biology, etc.) and economics (top industries, aerospace branch for exemple). It is easy to understand that the databases have central position today: They have got an structuring role in the developement of utilities for orientation and analysis. The MR are produced by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and are also available in printed form, as CD-ROM and online.

The General Concept of EMIS
The idea to develop the European Mathematical Information Service EMIS was born at the meeting of the executive committee of the EMS (European Mathematical Society) in Cortona/Italy, October 1994. It was decided to set up a system of electronic servers in Europe for Mathematics under the auspices of the EMS, and this was extended very soon to the current version of a central server collecting mathematical information and distributing this through a world-wide system of mirror servers. The installation of the central server began in March 1995 in co-operation with FIZ Karlsruhe at the editorial office of Zentralblatt fur Mathematik in Berlin. In June 1995 EMIS went on-line under the URL http://www.emis.de/

Description and scope:
The Central European Journal of Mathematics (CEJM) is published by Central European Science Journals. This new journal is devoted to scientific publications in all areas of pure mathematics. Papers in applied mathematics, which have special importance for theoretical studies, are also accepted. We welcome research articles, containing new results with complete proofs, and good survey papers. Though CEJM is localized in Central Europe, its Editorial Board will gather also mathematicians from outside the region. Good papers from all over the world are welcomed. Because CEJM is located in Central and Eastern Europe the mathematicians working or originating in this area will find the shortest and easy way to the Journal. The papers are published only in English and only in electronic form. The CEJM guarantees a high standard of editorial work together with a friendly attitude towards authors.

  • To promote the use of mathematical models in industry: Engineers, applied scientists and mathematicians working in industry can greatly benefit from close collaboration with university applied mathematicians with relevant skills and knowledge. On the other hand, working on real-world research projects is a fascinating way of leaving the ivory tower.
  • To educate Industrial Mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts: Within European industry, there is a shortage of industrial mathematicians who are familiar with the latest mathematical ideas and techniques. ECMI teaching centers are providing short courses for this need, in addition to running a joint two-year educational programme on Mathematics for Industry.
  • To operate on a European scale: Special mathematical knowledge and skills are spread all over Europe. Therefore, exchange programmes are necessary in training, research and industrial collaboration.
