The Bourbaki view
The book series in the name of Nicolas Bourbaki (a pen-name for a group of French mathematicians) 'takes up mathematics from the beginning, and gives complete proofs'. This beginning [bourbaki-sets] is something like Zermelo set theory axiomatized in a system of first order logic, which includes an indefinite descriptor building in the Axiom of (Global) Choice. For whereas in the past it was thought that every branch of mathematics depended on its own particular intuitions which provided its concepts and prime truths, nowadays it is known to be possible, logically speaking, to derive practically the whole of known mathematics from a single source, the Theory of Sets. Elsewhere [bourbaki-found] says: On these foundations, I state that I can build up the whole of mathematics of the present day; and if there is anything original in my procedure, it lies solely in the fact that, instead of being content with such a statement, I proceed to prove it in the same way as Diogenes proved the existence of motion; and my proof will become more and more complete as my treatise grows. The Bourbaki development is intellectually elegant, if rather austere. Stress is placed on developing properties of various key mathematical structures like topological spaces and groups. Some structures are instances of several others (e.g. topological groups are both topological spaces and groups), or are derived from others using certain canonical techniques such as completion. The relative sophistication of these techniques means that the set theory is used heavily even in the study of abstract structures; moreover, set theory is often necessary to provide existence proofs for many of them. So although Hilbert's axiomatic method was an important inspiration, deduction from the structure axioms uses much more than pure (first order) logic. Really, one is working all the time in axiomatic set theory. In the IMPS terminology

White hair, I thought. Since meeting her, I'd started to see myself as silver haired. Fine pale hairs floated around me, settling gently on the floor. "It's my biography," I wanted to say, but didn't. Looking down, all I saw was biographies. An unread library was lying on the floor: volumes of Who's Who

First Year Calculus
If you have a computer and browser which support Java, there are several useful programs you can run from the Web to help with calculus. These do not require you to know any programming or anything about the Java language.
Applets Made Specifically for use with Georgia Tech Courses
A collection of applets has been written specifically for use in the courses in the Georgia Tech calculus sequence . This growing collection is cataloged here by course, together with a collection of suggested projects and experiments for students to do. Each experiment has specific learning objectives that are described in the project catalog.
Applets from outside Georgia Tech
  • Plotting graphs (an applet by Scott Herod at Boulder.) A picture is worth a thousand data points. With this applet you can plot simple functions on line.
  • Tangent lines and secant lines (an applet by Bill Ziemer at Long Beach.) This applet gives a visual idea of the tangent line as a limit of a secant line.

    This article is an outgrowth of a lecture given at the University of Bochum, Germany, October 1995, in a Colloquium in honor of R. Remmert, and at the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, September 1996. With permission of the author, it is being published concurrently in the
    Notices and in the Mitteilungen der Deutsche Mathematiker-Veremigung.
    The choice of dates is dictated by personal circumstances: they roughly bound the period in which I had inside knowledge of the work of Bourbaki, first through informal contacts with several members, then as a member for twenty years, until the mandatory retirement at fifty. Being based largely on personal recollections, my account is frankly subjective. Of course, I checked my memories against the available documentation, but the latter is limited in some ways: not much of the discussions about orientation and general goals has been recorded. Another member might present a different picture.

    The Continuing Silence
    An Interview with Pierre Cartier, June 18, 1997

    Marjorie Senechal
    If you are a mathematician working today, you have almost certainly been influenced by Bourbaki, at least in style and spirit, and perhaps to a greater extent than you realize. But if you are a student, you may never have heard of it, him, them. What or who is, or was, Bourbaki? Check as many as apply . Bourbaki is, or was, as the case may be:
    • the discoverer (or inventor, if you prefer) of the notion of a mathematical structure;
    • one of the great abstractionist movements of the twentieth century;
    • a small but enormously influential community of mathematicians;
    • a collective that hasn't published for fifteen years.
    The answer is: all of the above , and they are four closely woven strands of an important chapter in intellectual history. Is it time to write that chapter? Has the story of Bourbaki come to an end? Bourbaki was born in Paris in 1935 when a small group of mathematicians at the Ecole Normale Superieure, dissatisfied with the courses they were teaching, decided to reformulate them. Most mathematicians have had that experience at one time or another, but the scope of Bourbaki's dissatisfaction grew quickly and without bound. By 1939, writing as an anonymous collective under the pseudonym Nicolas Bourbaki, it began to publish a series of books intended to transform the theory and practice of mathematics itself. From its beginning, Bourbaki was a fervent believer in the unity and universality of mathematics, and dedicated itself to demonstrating both by recasting all of mathematics into a unified whole. Its goals were total formalization and perfect rigor. In the post-war years, Bourbaki metamorphosed from rebel to establishment.

His success in the war with Italy was only second to that of MacMahon , and in 1862 he was proposed as a candidate for the vacant Greek throne, but declined the proffered honour. In 1870 the emperor entrusted him with the command of the Imperial Guard, and he played an important part in the fighting round Metz.
