41. History Of Mathematics In South Asia
Numerals were used where there were no alphabets or before alphabets were evolved in ancient China or Egypt. South asian Mathematical Texts.

History of Mathematics in South Asia Introduction The history of mathematics in South Asia is an ancient one, and includes ancient tally marks, the Kali calendar , agriculture, irrigation, construction of multi-storied temples in caves, on mountains, on riverbanks and all over the South Asian continent. From the Harappa-Mohenjodaro civilization, mathematics was refined during the Jain, Buddhist, Brahmin and numerous other religious movements that followed. Harappa-Mohenjodaro Seals In Harappa-Mohenjodaro cultures (3300 - 2000 BC), seals were used to make a sealing, or positive imprint. Sealings were used in ancient times for trade. They would be made on ceramics or the clay tags used to seal the rope around bundles of goods. The language and meaning of seals from the Harappa-Mohenjodaro civilization are not really understood, however, they had mathematical properties, as the tally marks on the seals below clearly show. Numerous Harappa-Mohenjodaro seals have been found in ancient Mesopotamian cities. There is evidence for settlements of Indus valley traders in ancient Mesopotamia, in the form of Mesopotamian seals with Harappa-Mohenjodaro language characters South Asian Languages The language used by the Harappans is still unknown, but is assumed to be Dravidian in nature. Sanskrit became the elitist language of the Indus Valley from about 1000 BC, however,. there are Dravidian loan words in the Rigvedic language, including

INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND MATHEMATICS IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
Attia A. Ashour Mathematics enjoys the same popularity as other disciplines, (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, etc.) with neither the governments of the developing countries nor the International Organizations whose aim is to help these countries. However, certain aspects of mathematics or related to it, such as Computer Science, Information Theory, Statistics & Probability, Modelling, etc., have been established as worthy of support. It is not my intention here to enlarge on this or to give reasons for it. What I want to emphasize is that there is a need to recognize the importance of mathematics at large in its own right and to provide institutes of mathematics and mathematicians in the developing countries with the help needed to continue and improve their work and in particular to develop the "critical mass" which does not yet exist in some of these countries. Regional Unions and Societies of Mathematics also exist. Examples of these are the African Mathematical Union, the Latin American Mathematical Society and the South East Asian Mathematical Society. These organizations help mathematicians in the respective regions to hold meetings and to publish regional journals. Again, UNESCO plays an important role in funding the activities of these organizations.

"Technology in Mathematics: Engaging Learners, Empowering Teachers and Enabling Research" There is little doubt that technology has made an impact on the teaching and Mathematics. In this conference, we shall go beyond justifying the use of technology in Mathematics to discuss and examine the best practices of applying technology in the teaching and learning of Mathematics and in Mathematics research. In particular, the conference will focus on how technology can be exploited to enrich and enhance Mathematics learning, teaching and research at all levels.
Researchers, mathematicians, educators and teachers are invited to share their knowledge in the area of using technology to engage learners and empower teachers of Mathematics, or enable research in any field of Mathematics or Mathematics Education.

Past, Present and Future of the Society
The Hong Kong Mathematical Society was established in 1979 under the enthusiastic support and encouragement of Prof. Y.C. Wong. The initial institutional members included Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Baptist College, Hong Kong Polytechnic and University of Hong Kong. The aims of the Society are to foster the academic research and information exchanges amongst colleagues and to provide favorable conditions for mathematics educations, both in theory and practice. Today the Society is supported by great number of mathematicians working in local universities and schools. Our institutional members have increased from 4 to 14 and have included all tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. The Society has been a member of the International Mathematical Union since 1982 and has been responsible for the editing of the Bulletin of South East Asian Mathematical Society. In addition, the Society will have its own Bulletin starting in the summer of 1997. To foster the exchanges of idea, the Society has organized series of important conferences. These include the SEAMS Conference in 1980, The First Asian Mathematical Conference in 1990 and The International Mathematical Olympaid in 1994. The Society also has, with the support from Urban Council, organized public lecture to popularize mathematics.

International Workshop and Conference on Analysis and Applications May 15-19, 2000 At Chiangmai University Chiangmai, Thailand Organizers: Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, Chiangmai University. Mathematical Association of Thailand. Center for Promotion of Mathematics Research of Thailand (CEPMART). Southeast Asian Mathematical Society (SEAM). Objectives: Mathematical analysis is a very useful tool to solve problems in other disciplines such as Physics, Engineerings, Economics etc. Department of Mathematics, Chiangmai University, CEPMART, Mathematical Association of Thailand, and SEAM realize how important this area of mathematics is and agree that some activities are needed to bring mathematicians and those who are involved with mathematical analysis together to share their knowledge and to discuss about their research. It is our hope that the participants will gain more knowledge and experience in the field of mathematical analysis such as Real analysis, Complex analysis, Functional analysis, Numerical analysis, and related field with applications. About Chiangmai: Chiangmai is an ancient city located in the northern part of Thailand. Chiangmai is easily accessed from the capital, Bangkok, by air, train or bus. Chiangmai is a center of a substantial and thriving tourist industry with much to see and do. The region is the cultural center of the north and one can find ancient and beautiful temples built in the 12
