Changes in the Value of Money over time
Historical Background
A frequent question is "how much would a specified amount of money at a certain period of time be worth today?" The sources listed below are useful in attempting to answer this question. Comparisons of purchasing power are only reliable over short periods. A typical computer in 2004 is a very different machine from its counterpart of 5 years ago. Indices of inflation fail to take proper account of improvements in quality Even in the essentials of life there are significant changes over the years. A typical diet in most advanced countries will be rather different today from what it would have been before the refrigerator became a common household item. Therefore over long time spans, changes in prices give only the very roughest and most approximate idea of changes in the value of money.
For a narrative account of monetary history since the dawn of civilisation onwards see A History of Money from Ancient Times to the Present Day by Glyn Davies The web site based on the book includes an extensive annotated chronology as well as some essays based on themes from the book.

Archimedes and the Computation of Pi
Archimedes (approximately 285-212 B.C.) was the most famous ancient Greek mathematician and inventor. He invented the Screw of Archimedes , a device to lift water, and played a major role in the defense of Syracuse against a Roman Siege, inventing many war machines that were so effective that they long delayed the final sacking of the city. For a concise and yet informative discussion of Archimedes see the article "Archimedes" in the macropedia of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Here are some links to other Archimedes related web pages:

173. NTTI Lesson: A SLICE OF PI
They can also conduct a probability experiment that approximates the valueof pi. (Values should be close to 3.) Ask if any group came close to pi?
http://www.thirteen.org/edonline/nttidb/lessons/id/sliceid.html
A SLICE OF PI
Grades 7 - 9
In this lesson, students will discover pi, its history, and some of the applications of its uses in the world today. Many students begin the study of circles in geometry without any understanding of the number pi and its mathematical power. This lesson gives students a feel for pi.
During the lesson, students will conduct an experiment by measuring the diameter and circumference of various circular objects to calculate their own approximation of pi. They can also conduct a probability experiment that approximates the value of pi.
Students will identify uses in the real world for pi, both dealing and not dealing with circles.
As a concluding activity, students will compare various values for pi discovered throughout its history, determine whose value was the best, and theorize why people used fractions instead of decimals for pi. MATHEMATICS!: The Story of Pi The student should be able to:
  • state that pi is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter of a circle.
  • list two approximations for pi, a fraction and a decimal.

176. Modern History Sourcebook: David Ricardo: The Iron Law Of Wages
A selection from Ricardo's book, On Wages, describing the labor theory of value.

Back to Modern History SourceBook
Modern History Sourcebook:
David Ricardo:
The Iron Law of Wages, 1817
David Ricardo (1772-1823), an English banker was also an important early economist. His most well-known argument was that wages "naturally" tended towards a minimum level corresponding to the subsistence needs of the workers. The attraction of this idea for factory owners is evident. It also influenced Marx in his early pessimistic views about the possibility of workers benefiting from capitalism. Ricardo's views on the "labor theory of value" were also important in Marx's economic thought.
From David Ricardo. On Wages Money, from its being a commodity obtained from a foreign country, from its being the general medium of exchange between all civilized countries, and from its being also distributed among those countries in proportions which are ever changing with every improvement in commerce and machinery, and with every increasing difficulty of obtaining food and necessaries for an increasing population, is subject to incessant variations. In stating the principles which regulate exchangeable value and price, we should carefully distinguish between those variations which belong to the commodity itself, and those which are occasioned by a variation in the medium in which value is estimated, or price expressed. A rise in wages, from an alteration in the value of money, produces a general effect on price, and for that reason it produces no real effect whatever on profits. On the contrary, a rise of wages, from the circumstance of the labourer being more liberally rewarded, or from a difficulty of procuring the necessaries on which wages are expended, does not, except in some instances, produce the effect of raising price, but has a great effect in lowering profits. In the one case, no greater proportion of the annual labour of the country is devoted to the support of the labourers; in the other case, a larger portion is so devoted.
