Curve-stitch Isometric Cube
The figure above is an instance of a design I created nearly forty years ago. A framed version of it hangs on my kitchen wall. That picture is a negative print (i.e., white on black) of an India ink drawing on vellum. It is a minor conversation piece—first-time viewers are often surprised to learn that the drawing contains no curves. More amazing to me is that I drew it with drafting pen and straightedge without introducing major imperfections. I cannot imagine repeating the feat. The figure shown here is a conversion of output generated using Adobe PostScript . It doesn’t reproduce the razor-sharp lines of the original, but it does capture the spirit of the figure. My talent as a graphic artist is limited, but I have always enjoyed drawing designs on paper. Designs employing only straight lines—such as this one—permit me to masquerade as a real artist, so long as I don’t have to draw in public. This design resulted from combining two designs—the curve-stitch parabola and the isometric cube. I encountered the former in a junior high school math class. A drawing such as the following can be made with needle and thread, punching holes in cardboard and stretching the thread along its surface:

Origami The Japanese art of paper folding. In traditional origami, constructions are done using a single sheet of colored paper that is often, though not always, square. In modular origami, a number of individual "units," each folded from a single sheet of paper, are combined to form a compound structure. Origami is an extremely rich art form, and constructions for thousands of objects, from dragons to buildings to vegetables have been devised. Many mathematical shapes can also be constructed, especially using modular origami. The images above show a number of modular polyhedral origami constructed by E. K. Herrstrom, together with an animated crane constructed in Mathematica by L. Zamiatina.

Mathematical puzzles vary from the simple to deep problems which are still unsolved. The whole history of mathematics is interwoven with mathematical games which have led to the study of many areas of mathematics. Number games, geometrical puzzles, network problems and combinatorial problems are among the best known types of puzzles. The Rhind papyrus shows that early Egyptian mathematics was largely based on puzzle type problems. For example the papyrus, written in around 1850 BC, contains a rather familiar type of puzzle. You can see a picture of the Rhind papyrus Seven houses contain seven cats. Each cat kills seven mice. Each mouse had eaten seven ears of grain. Each ear of grain would have produced seven hekats of wheat. What is the total of all of these? Similar problems appear in Fibonacci 's Liber Abaci written in 1202 and the familiar St Ives Riddle of the 18 th Century based on the same idea (and on the number 7). Greek mathematics produced many classic puzzles. Perhaps the most famous are from
