If you are involved in any way with teaching math in middle school or bringing elementary students into the world of mathematics, either as a teacher, tutor, homeschooling parent, or concerned parent, you've come to the right place. That's true too if you like such topics as the golden ratio, Fibonacci numbers, gifted education, or interdisciplinary teaching. You can find good mathematics professional development here too! St. Patrick's Day in the Classroom
    Holiday Background Information
St. Patrick's Day commemorates the patron saint of Ireland, Bishop Patrick, who in the year 432 left his home to bring Christianity to Ireland. Tradition says that Patrick drove the snakes from Ireland, but biologists say there were none in the country at the time. Shamrocks are associated with St. Patrick's Day because the Bishop used the three leaves to illustrate the Trinity. The holiday, March 17th, is marked by parades in cities across the United States. The largest of these, held since 1762, is in New York City, and draws more than one million spectators each year. In Ireland, it is a religious holiday similar to Christmas and Easter. The parades, shamrocks, and green beer are provided primarily for tourists. For more information on Ireland, visit my Ireland Section
Let's Learn About the Emerald Isle
The following activities are designed to acquaint students with the country of Ireland. Discuss the country of Ireland and the history of St. Patrick

    136. Title
A Message to teachers. If you ve never seen these math topics before Don t be surprised. Most people don t think of mathematics
    http://www.c3.lanl.gov/mega-math/teacher.html
    A Message to Teachers
If you've never seen these math topics before...
    • Don't be surprised.
    • Most people don't think of mathematics as a live science where new discoveries are being made every day. Yet it is! The traditional school mathematics curriculum seldom exposes you or your students to topics and material that mathematicians find stimulating and exciting, so these are the topics that we have chosen to put in MegaMath.
    • It is very important for students to acquire a feeling for the broad range of content in the field of mathematics. It is true that mathematics is practical, but it is also imaginative and creative. Mathematicians have fun doing what they do because they are experimenting with new things. Professional mathematicians don't bang their heads on the table trying to find correct answers to age-old problems! They are too busy trying to find the answers to the amazing questions that pop into their heads when they think about things in creative and unusual ways.
    Don't be intimidated!
    • These materials have been designed with the assumption that you have had little or no experience with the mathematical topics contained in them.
