W How can math be so universal? First, human beings didn't invent math concepts; we discovered them. Also, the language of math is numbers, not English or German or Russian. If we are well versed in this language of numbers, it can help us make important decisions and perform everyday tasks. Math can help us to shop wisely, buy the right insurance, remodel a home within a budget, understand population growth, or even bet on the horse with the best chance of winning the race. Join us as we explore how math can help us in our daily lives. In this exhibit, you'll look at the language of numbers through common situations, such as playing games or cooking. Put your decision-making skills to the test by deciding whether buying or leasing a new car is right for you, and predict how much money you can save for your retirement by using an interest calculator. 110. Patterns In Mathematics
teachers explore how patterns occur in numbers and in words in this interactive lab.
http://www.learner.org/teacherslab/math/patterns/index.html
Some people say that mathematics is the science of patterns. That's not a bad description. Not only do patterns take many forms over the range of school mathematics, they are also a unifying theme. Visit the lab to explore logic patterns number patterns , and word patterns . In queries about the attributes of things, you'll apply reasoning to answer "what's next?" not with a number but with a description. You'll focus on how to develop "function sense" without simply asking for the next number in the pattern. And through visual and written forms of expressions, you'll connect language and mathematics to develop skills for thinking clearly, strategically, critically, and creatively.

Our Center has worked with teachers and schools to study and develop ways to advance K-12 students' learning of mathematics and science. Our long-term studies showed that students can learn more challenging content at earlier ages than traditionally expected. The Center's work yielded new visions for student achievement and professional development programs that strengthed teachers' content knowledge and in-class practices.
