We developed this program from the vision of providing young children in Jersey City a chance to come to school excited and motivated by their joy in learning, discovering the mysteries of mathematics and science in a way that helps them marvel at the world. The result of this vision is the development of the Early Childhood Math Integration Program, a sustained, intensive professional development program for urban teachers in New Jersey. This program provides systematic solutions to this problem in the following ways:
  • High quality professional development in the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards and instructional strategies in early childhood math through the integration of science and technology. Mentor training for experienced teachers to support first- and second-year teachers in early childhood math, science, and technology instruction.

Activity Snapshot
Max's Math Adventures is a math and language arts game created specifically for students in grades K-2. Each adventure focuses on one math skill integral to the K-2 math curriculum. Hosts Max and Ruthie challenge young students to solve real-world math problems by using clues embedded in a fun, rhyming poem. Students will receive immediate feedback from Max, and are often encouraged to self-assess by comparing their answers to Max and Ruthie's. In addition to Max's Challenge, students can also try their hands at the Extra Challenges. Here you'll find extension activities of different levels to accommodate your students' varying needs. There is also an Activity Page for you to print out and distribute to your class. This page offers students an additional activity related to the poem and a blackline illustration to color in. Math Center Activities:
1. Cut out small objects on Ellison using fun foam - or use erasers from Oriental etc. Include a laminated strip of paper about 3 inches in width and an egg carton. Students make patterns or sort the objects.
2. Write numbers on stickers (round price stickers for garage sales work well) and glue into the bottom of egg cartons. Place a bag with small objects with the carton. Students can read number and count that many objects into egg cups.
3. Playdough, Mat, spinner. Write target numbers on spinner - many great spinners in most math books. Student spins a number: eg student spins 3 - student makes three balls out of the playdough and then creates a number 3 with it. You may include a large template for making the number.
4. Pocket charting: include a variety of number cards for students to sequence in the pocket chart. Remember to include a number line for self checking. 5. Macaroni patterns: strips of paper, glue, colored macaroni. Students create patterns. to make this more difficult - have students create half the pattern and then exchange with partner- each must finish the others pattern.

Most of us have traveled on an airplane, or we know someone who has. Do you ever wonder how airplanes fly? What causes the lift that gets the airplane off the runway? How does a pilot control the movement of the airplane? Why are the engines on an airliner different from the engines on a fighter plane? How does aerodynamics affect the flight of a model rocket or a kite? The information at this site is provided by the NASA Glennn Learning Technologies Project (LTP) to give you a better understanding of how aircraft work.

what we do
• Teacher Program - Two years of intensive staff development (60 hours per school year)
• Parent Program (SCPD) Workshops • Leadership Development (Principals and Teacher-leadership activities and retreats) • Data Based School Improvement The Teachers Academy offers an intensive two-year professional staff development program with extended follow-up and support. The program focuses on the best practices in mathematics and science education, emphasizing hands-on, standards-based instruction. Academy teachers receive tools (manipulatives) they can use and put into practice in their classroom. Technology is integrated throughout the 120 hours of mathematics and science instruction, and is a part of classroom implementation as well. Working together with the principal, teachers, and parents, the Academy supports the entire school community in the improvement of mathematics and science instruction. 1. Teaching Philosophy and Goals I base my teaching on the belief that the only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics. While the process of reading examples and proofs in textbooks and from lecture notes is valuable, the real learning comes through one's own efforts at solving mathematical problems, either computational, theoretical, or both. This is achieved mostly through class assignments, but also through in-class discussions and exercises. I view my role as a facilitator for this process. I must design the framework in which learning can take place, and then stimulate and nurture the students' development, giving help in terms of knowledge, techniques, and encouragement. My goals in teaching are not just to promote learning of the subject matter. I also try to help the students learn to think logically, learn problem-solving methods and techniques, and improve writing skills (writing clearly and concisely, explaining step-by-step processes, providing valid reasons for logical arguments). In addition, I try to help students see the course material in a holistic context by requiring them to synthesize the various concepts of the course by applying them together.
