Inspired by Standards: Math Teachers in Their Classrooms
Producer: Shelley Goldman
This CD-ROM is a tool for exploring standards-based mathematics teaching. It serves as a window into classrooms where teachers are implementing the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (2000) . As a tool, it combines video from five middle school classrooms with lesson plans, extensive background mathematics for each lesson, and other resources. Discussion questions provoke reflection on the standards-based content, pedagogy, and principles. Inspired by Standards can help teachers, teacher educators, and preservice teachers identify issues involved in meeting current mathematics reforms.

Gifted Science and Math Teachers Awarded
October 2000 - News
Applications for the 2001 Growth Initiatives for Teachers (GIFT) program are now available. GIFT is a grant program established by the GTE Foundation to promote the integration of math and science in the classroom, to encourage the innovate use of technology in education, and to provide recognition and new opportunities for outstanding teachers.
Designed for both public and private school math and science teachers, grades 7 to 12 in the U.S., the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, GIFT grants are awarded by Verizon to 70 teams of one math and one science teacher from the same secondary school who have developed school projects that integrate math, science and technology in a creative way. Each winning team shares a $15,000 grant: $8,000 to implement the school enrichment project and $3,500 for each of the participating teachers to pursue professional development activities. Applications are available online at www.gte.com

New York City, April 2003. Educating math teachers by Alfred S. Posamentier,Ph.D. Yet this is where we find to most mathphobic teachers.

by Alfred S. Posamentier, Ph.D. A well-known journalist was asked what major he would advise a college freshman, enthusiastic about embarking on a career in journalism. He replied, anything in the liberal arts, but don’t take any journalism courses. Strange advice that is perhaps unexpected. This sort of response reflects a growing trend back to liberal arts. This theme is nobly touted in James O. Freedman’s new book Liberal Education and the Public Interest (University of Iowa Press, 2003). The basic argument bandied about is that a well-rounded individual is more valuable than a narrow specialist—the specialized training can come later. It is well known that many large companies prefer to train their own employees in ways that not only familiarize them with the latest technology, but also reflect the company’s culture. It is easier to train an educated person, than to educate a trained person. Teachers should not only be familiar with the latest thinking about effective methods of instruction, but also with the infusion of technology, done appropriately and without the often-distracting flare that can accompany these initiatives. Care must be taken that the technological glitz can overshadow the subject. The key areas in education today, especially from a political standpoint, are the “three R’s”—reading, writing and arithmetic. These are the areas on which schools are judged. A case in point is the recent listing of the 200 most effective New York City schools—based on their performance on these subjects.

Are Math Teachers' Beliefs "Mathematically Correct"?
Lynn Arthur Steen, St. Olaf College
(Ruminations on what parents think when they listen to mathematics teachers' true beliefs. Prepared in response to a discussion at the April 1998 meeting of the Minnesota Council of Teachers of Mathematics (MCTM) on how to convey teachers' beliefs to parents and administrators who are critical of the NCTM Standards.) 1. Focus on problems and problem solving. How can you expect students to solve math problems if they don't know any math? Shouldn't math teachers focus first on teaching math? 2. Student-centered learning. This is the main problem with schools todaychildren are being taught by children. Students deserve to be taught by teachers, not by other students. 3. All student think mathematically. What good is thinking if you can't calculate volumes or solve equations? Students should first learn to do mathematics. Then they may have something to think about. 4. All students participate.
